It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly eight years since Popeye’s dropped the chicken sandwich that set in motion the great chicken sandwich war of 2019. Armed with nothing more than a simple menu addition (and a perfectly timed tweet), it became the chicken sandwich heard ‘round the world. Instantly, every chicken chain, large and small, began adding or updating its chicken sandwich to try and compete with the scrappy new player on the block, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Although we’ll likely never see anything quite like that again, a new battle seems to be emerging over who can out-sauce who, and this time, Atlanta-based chicken chain Zaxbys appears to be leading the offensive. After officially opening its first location in the Big Apple a few weeks ago, Zaxbys decided that it was time to put Raising Cane’s on notice that a new sauce boss was in town. The gauntlet arrived in the form of a strategically placed sauce vending machine, aka the Zax Machine, staged outside Raising Cane’s Astor Place location in Manhattan.

So far, Raising Cane’s hasn’t responded, but that hasn’t stopped Zaxbys from seemingly dragging another beloved chicken brand into the fray by adding two new menu items, including one that feels eerily familiar. In what appears to be a direct shot at Chick-fil-A, Zaxbys just added the Peppermint Cookies & Cream Shake to its menu for a limited time, and if that wasn’t enough, fans can also indulge in the new Honey Chipotle Sauce.

The decadent new treat is a hand-spun peppermint-flavored milkshake, mixed and topped with cookies-and-cream pieces to capture the flavors of the season. It sounds incredibly delicious, but you have to admit it also seems pretty similar to Chick-fil-A’s seasonal Peppermint Chip milkshake. Could it be just a coincidence? Maybe, but who knows? To be fair, Zaxby’s hasn’t called Chick-fil-A out directly, and any perceived drama is purely speculative, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the two brands exchanged a little friendly fire.

View this post on InstagramSpeaking of fire, Zaxbys also added the new sweet-and-spicy Honey Chipotle sauce to its menu for a limited time, and it’s just the kind of bold new flavor that’s sure to keep the competition on its toes. Crafted with honey, brown sugar, red chili, and chipotle peppers, the resulting sauce sounds like one we’d order on repeat. Unfortunately, both the new sauce and the shake, which definitely feels like a subtle swipe at Chick-fil-A, will only be available through January 18.
On the bright side, Zax Rewardz members who order online or via the Zaxbys app received early access to try the new Honey Chipotle sauce before it officially launches on November 2. As far as which side we’re on in the brewing sauce wars, well, let’s just say we’re partial to them all. That said, if you need us, we’ll be at Zaxby’s for the foreseeable future.
