Shirley Ballas, known as the “Queen of Latin,” entered the ballroom for Dancing with the Stars’ Horror Movie Night and had the contestants scared for their lives.
The formidable dance expert, who’s been a judge since 2017 on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing since 2017 and was as a judge on ABC’s new Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, gave high marks to some duos, but handed out fours to two duos — the lowest score anyone has received at this point in the competition across 35 seasons.
The fours went to Tatyana Ali & pro Jan Ravnik and Julia Stiles & pro Ezra Sosa; both duos received sevens from judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Derek Hough, and an eight from Bruno Tonioli). Meanwhile, Ballas gave a five to Tyler Cameron & pro Sharna Burgess, while the other judges all gave them sevens.
In week seven of DWTS, after two months of round-the-clock rehearsals and performances, it’s virtually unheard of for a duo to receive a four. Right after the live show ended, a reporter from ABC’s On the Red Carpet told Ballas that, exclaiming, “Shirley, with a big smile, you gave some of the worst scores we’ve ever seen in Week 7!”
Ballas, who is President of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, looked shocked as she said, “Oh my goodness! Now, to me, those scores are actually still quite good because they’re not twos and threes!”
She further explained, “Four, fives, and sixes to me is generally a good score. You’re on a good track. And then, when you get to sevens, eights, and nines, you’ve really mastered your craft.”
When the reporter told Ballas that in 35 seasons, there have only been “a couple” of twos ever given to contestants, she quipped, “It’s a good job I’m not a full-time judge on this, then, isn’t it? Because I am still giving out threes on week seven on Strictly, but it’s acceptable over there (in the U.K.). I’ve never been a great person of fluff, which is, ‘You’re all great.’ I like people to get some knowledge.”

And trust me, those fours are from a good heart, and they are a good score.”
Interestingly, the two duos who received fours from Ballas did not wind up going home. Their combined judges’ scores from the last two weeks plus viewers’ live votes kept them safe. In the night’s double elimination, the duo who got Ballas’ five score — Cameron and Burgess — were sent home along with Jackson Olson and pro Emma Slater (Ballas gave their Joker routine one of her highest scores, a nine).
Fans had mixed reactions to Ballas’ judging, with many on Reddit loving her critiques but wishing that she’d been there to judge more Latin dances (only Ali and Ravnik performed one), noting that she tended to give high scores to the more creative and subjective contemporary dances.
On Instagram, 1,300 people liked a fellow fan’s comment that said of Ali and Ravnik’s low score from Ballas, “I do think it’s annoying that she’s giving them a 4 for a dance that she knows really well and than a 10 for a dance that she is not as familiar with, the clivage between her scores and the other judges is kind of insane.”
Dancing with the Stars returns next Monday, November 2, at 8 p.m. ET/PT for Disney Night, when Wicked star Cynthia Erivo will be the guest judge.
