The couple met while swimming for the University of Tennessee, with both athletes joining the team as freshmen during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Caribé came to the University of Tennessee in 2022 from Brazil; in his freshman season with the Volunteers, he earned All-America recognition in six events and helped set two program records at the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships. Over the course of his time with the Vols, Caribé brought home 23 SEC medals, including five gold, 11 silver and seven bronze. He also earned two individual NCAA silver medals, in the 100 free (40.55) during his sophomore year and in the 50 free (18.19) during his senior year, and won two national championship titles in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Caribé currently holds the second-fastest time in Tennessee program history in the 50 free (18.17), 100 free (40.15), 100 fly (43.93) and 800 free relay, and he holds school records in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

At the international level, Caribé won three gold medals at the 2023 Pan American Games; he prevailed in the 100 free, the men’s 400 free relay and mixed 400 free relay. That same year, he competed at the 2023 World Championships, where he finished 12th in the 100 free and helped Brazil to a 6th-place finish in both the men’s 400 free relay and the mixed 400 free relay.

Caribé qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made it to the semifinals of the 100 free, finishing 10th overall in 48.03. A few months later, he won two silver medals at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, posting a time of 20.57 in the 50 free and 45.47 in the 100 free. Caribé’s performance in the 100 free broke both the South American continental record and Brazilian national record in the event, which previously belonged to fellow Brazilian César Cielo.

Burroughs was a native of Tennessee and was a two-time Tennessee high school state champion. The summer before joining the Volunteers, she competed at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships, where she earned a second swim in the 100 free and 200 free.

Her freshman year at Tennessee, Burroughs was a part of the silver medal-winning 800 free relay team at the 2023 SEC Championships, which posted what was then the sixth-fastest time in program history (6:58.26). That performance now marks the 10th-fastest time in school history.

Burroughs’ top individual SEC performances came at the 2024 championships her sophomore year, when she placed 13th in the 500 free (4:44.72), 14th in the 200 free (1:45.39) and 23rd in the 100 free (49.14). She was named to the 2023 All-SEC Second Team and earned 2023-2024 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition.

Burroughs graduated with her undergraduate degree in kinesiology a year early in 2025 before going on to begin her master’s degree in agricultural leadership, education and communications at the University of Tennessee and finish out her athletic eligibility with the team. In 2026, she was named to the SEC Community Service Team for her volunteer work with multiple charities in Brazil aimed at empowering youth through sports.

Caribé is still competing internationally; he raced at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships in August, where he placed 3rd in the 50 free (21.54), 100 free (47.89) and 50 fly (22.88). Burroughs, meanwhile, is no longer competing after wrapping up her collegiate career with Tennessee.
