— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) October 28, 2026 We’re just 13 days away from the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline. I hope the Bears can reel in a notable deal. ICYMI: Two NFC teams swung trades on Tuesday. Neither was the Bears. First, it was the Seattle Seahawks trading for perennial Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson. Are we sure the Indianapolis Colts couldn’t have waited another week to cut this deal? Sheesh. The first big trade ahead of the deadline, one that sent an All-Pro-caliber guard to Chicago’s next opponent, isn’t what I had in mind.FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
Even still … I like that the Bears were involved in talks with the Colts. It gives credence to the reports about the team being aggressive at the deadline. The common chatter among Bears fans was that a Nelson trade would have slid Joe Thuney out to left tackle. But that’s not how I saw it. The Bears (and Thuney) have been abundantly clear about keeping Thuney at left guard unless it’s in an emergency pinch. Therefore, I came to the conclusion that the Bears were targeting Nelson as their left tackle option. Oh, don’t give me that look. I have a perfectly cromulent explanation:As for Quenton Nelson as a trade target, it makes sense to me. Nelson is one of the NFL’s best offensive linemen. He has eight Pro Bowl nods and has been recognized as a first-team All-Pro three times. That said, I’ve long wondered if his best position could be at left tackle. It is something I’ve been thinking about since he was a Bears draft target in 2018. Nelson has the size and tools to be a competent left tackle. Perhaps there were folks at Halas Hall saw Nelson’s availability on the trade market as an opportunity to upgrade their offensive line in a unique way by moving him to left tackle.
Nelson is a free agent after this season. And while I don’t think he’ll be a Bears target, if I were his agent, I’d check in with teams that need left tackle solutions and see if they viewed Nelson as a left tackle option. At a minimum, it is the kind of exploratory discussion that could help the player max out his next contract. After all, it’s no secret that left tackles get paid more than left guards. Seeing that the Colts sent another impact player to yet another team jockeying for playoff position in the NFC was annoying, too. DeForest Buckner goes from Indy to San Francisco, reuniting the veteran interior defensive lineman with the team that drafted him. What lessens the sting here (for me) is that SF was Buckner’s preferred (h/t Jordan Schultz) destination. My mother taught me at a young age that the heart wants what it wants, and there’s nothing you can do to change that. In other words, there should be no hard feelings for Buckner choosing the Niners — or even Bears GM Ryan Poles for not getting a deal done. Spot the Bears here, and you’ll see why trading for interior defensive line help is a top priority:DT percentile grades in pass rush and run defense t.co/lcUGCavzt8
— Jrfortgang (@throwthedamball) October 28, 2026 It is interesting to see ex-Bears defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr. in the top-right quadrant of the graphic above. However, I’ll note that current Bears DT Grady Jarrett has the NFL’s second-best run-stop win rate among defensive tackles. Only LaCale London (another ex-Bear on the Falcons) ranks higher. Dexter isn’t anywhere in the top-10 here. Hmm. The Bears had a bonus practice on Tuesday. And in it, they saw the return of defensive lineman Montez Sweat. Given what we discussed about the needs along the defensive line, it is a welcome return for Sweat after a two-game suspension. Patrick shared a quick quote in Bears Bits, but I was curious what else Sweat had to say after his absence. Kudos to Courtney Cronin (ESPN) for sharing more quotes:“I’ve been in the league going on Year 8 now. I haven’t wound up with a positive like that before, so I guess I’ll just get back to my regular routine now.”
“Nobody wants to go look someone in the eye after you’ve done something detrimental like that to the team, but those are things you have to do to move forward.”
“I take everything that comes with it. The only thing I can do now is just look forward and continue to play.”
My big takeaway from the Cronin story is what Sweat said about how difficult it was to face his head coach after the suspension. He knows he let his coaches and teammates down. I look forward to seeing how he makes amends. While Sweat was away, these are the numbers Austin Booker produced: 0 sacks, 0 tackles-for-loss, 0 quarterback hits in 82 defensive snaps (75.2%). It’s a small sample that included two games in five days, so I don’t want to be too harsh with my criticism. Still, this was an opportunity for Booker to flash but I was hoping for more from Booker. Maybe he’ll pick it back up with Sweat back in the lineup. Montez Sweat celebrates after a sack against the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images This is probably worth a deeper dive later, but Patrick Finley (Sun-Times) notes that NFL kickers aren’t as accurate as they were last year and aren’t hitting it from as deep as they were in 2025. Hmmm. An updated look at the top 25 trade candidates via CBS Sports. These are the players I’d be interested in the Bears acquiring: Eagles DT Moro Ojomo, Eagles EDGE Nolan Smith, Titans DT Jefferey Simmons, Chargers EDGE Khalil Mack, Chargers EDGE Tuli Tuipulotu, Cardinals EDGE Josh Sweat, Dolphins DL Zach Sieler, Jets EDGE Will McDonald IV.CHECK OUT THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
I had a blast talking about Chicago, pizza, Chicago pizza, and more: After putting up a clunker in Game 3, I’m glad World Series Game 4 between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Devil Rays was a 12-inning instant classic. I thought the Rays were done-zo in the 12th when Brewers infielder Cooper Pratt put Milwaukee ahead with a homer. But kudos to TB for scratching out two runs and gutting out a win. Not everyone is built like Mike Montgomery and able to get that final out of the World Series. Seeing that Chicago Blackhawks trade buzz is already building before Halloween stopped me in my tracks. Given the Oklahoma City Thunder’s injury issues, Alex Kirschenbaum writes about the Chicago Bulls as a possible trade fit.Bear down & gear up with some swag from our friends at @payhomage.bsky.social!
