Checks could soon go out for those eligible in a multi-million dollar class-action settlement involving AT&T.
A judge gave final approval for the settlement on Oct. 2, according to the settlement website.
Millions of AT&T customers whose personal information was stolen in data breaches had the opportunity to file claims in a $177 million class-action settlement. The deadline to file a claim was in December 2025.
The settlement covers two different breaches, the first of which included customer information from 2019 or earlier that had been released on the “dark web” in March of 2024. Roughly 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former account holders were impacted in the breach, which leaked data including sensitive information like Social Security numbers and passcodes, the telecommunications provider said at the time.
AT&T began notifying customers of a second, larger breach in July, roughly three months after learning data was “illegally downloaded from our workspace on a third-party cloud platform.”
That leak involved call and text records of nearly all AT&T customers from May through October of 2022, as well as a small subset from Jan. 2, 2023. The company insisted content of calls or texts, or other personally identifiable information, weren’t leaked. Rather, it said the breach included information like phone numbers.
A total of $177 million will be paid to those impacted by both data breaches, with up to $149 million going to the first “settlement class” and another $28 million for the second, under a preliminary approval order filed in June.
At the time, experts said individuals affected could receive payments of up to $7,500, though it remains unclear how much could actually be distributed.
Customers who had personal data compromised in the first breach may receive up to $5,000, according to the settlement administrator’s website. Individuals impacted by the second breach could be eligible for up to $2,500.
Some customers could potentially be “overlap settlement class members,” in which case they would be eligible for payments from both funds.
According to the settlement administrator’s website, email notices were previously sent to eligible class members from the email address attsettlement@e.emailksa.com, which contain information about the suit. Past customers who had service at some point between May 2022 and Nov. 22 should have received a notification with an account and case number if they were affected.
Final payment amounts will depend on the losses documented by each individual — as well as the total number of claims and added costs such as attorney fees.
While AT&T previously agreed to the class-action settlements, it has not admitted any wrongdoing associated with the breaches.
It was not immediately clear when checks would be distributed, but settlement administrators said “there may be appeals from [the approval decision] and resolving them can take time.”
