The reigning World Junior Record holder delivered an otherworldly time of 2:04.83 to become the first man ever under the 2:05 barrier in the event.
Ohashi powered his way to the front of the pack immediately off the blocks and never looked back, attacking the race from start to finish with a rapid stroke turnover compared to his competitors.
He wound up splitting 28.27/31.62 (59.89)/32.51/32.43 in his magnificent performance. His 59.89 opener is a solid 100m breaststroke time in its own right.
The teen completely sidestepped the 2:05 zone and dove right into the otherworldly 2:04 territory, erasing his former lifetime best and World Junior Record of 2:06.59 scored at the Japan Swim earlier this year.
The former World Record stood at the 2:05.48 Olympic medalist Qin Haiyang of China established three years ago. Qin was not among tonight’s field.
Comparing Ohashi’s performance against Qin’s, the former was faster on every leg save the final 50m, where Ohashi touched in 32.43 to Qin’s 32.12.
However, comparing Ohashi’s new World Record against his former PB, it’s evident the Japanese megastar was able to maintain his speed on the back half, clearing the 33-second threshold on the final stretch.

Japan has a long history of producing world-class performers in both the 100m and 200m breast, but the longer distance in particular.
The nation saw Masaru Furukawa become the first Japanese World Record holder in a time of 2:36.60 in 1954 before Kosuke Kitajima notched his own WR of 2:09.42 in 2003. Kitajima would go on to win both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events back-to-back at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.
More recently, it was now-retired prodigy Akihiro Yamaguchi who earned a new WR of 2:07.01 in 2012 before teammate Ippei Watanabe registered a new WR of 2:06.67 in 2017.
Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia broke new ground with a WR of 2:05.95 in 2022 to become the first-ever swimmer under 2:06, before Qin’s former WR of 2:05.48 from three years ago.
Now we see Ohashi bring the event into the 2:04 territory, a feat many thought would be possible for the teen but perhaps not this soon after having just broken the 2:07 barrier.
Not to be missed is the fact that runner-up Denis Petrashov of the University of Louisville just gave his nation of Kyrgyzstan its first-ever Asian Games swimming medal, hitting 2:08.67 for a new national record.
His previous best entering this competition was the 2:09.16 produced at the Pro Swim Series in June, so he dipped under the 2:09 barrier for the first time in his career.
Bronze went to Cho Sungjae of Korea, whose time of 2:08.76 was within striking distance of his best-ever outing of 2:08.59 he swam way back in 2020 at that year’s Korean Championships.
