Nico Hulkenberg has been handed a golden opportunity to make some headlines at Interlagos on Sunday, and the Audi veteran has no intention of letting it pass him by.
After a miserable Friday without a single lap of running due to technical problems, the German produced a superb recovery in Saturday's rain-lashed qualifying, securing sixth place before grid penalties for George Russell and Charles Leclerc promoted him to an excellent fourth on Sunday's grid.
It is Audi's best qualifying result of the 2026 season and puts Hulkenberg tantalisingly close to the front of the field at a circuit where he has enjoyed some memorable moments.
Indeed, Interlagos was where he claimed his only Formula 1 pole position back in 2010, also in a rain-affected qualifying session.
With the weather once again throwing the competitive order into disarray, the experienced German knows that Sunday could offer another opportunity to deliver something special. His message was straightforward: there is no reason to hold back.
From Friday disaster to front-running opportunity
Hulkenberg's Saturday performance was all the more impressive given the ground he had to recover. Technical issues had kept him sidelined throughout Friday, leaving him desperately short of preparation heading into a weekend where every lap in changing conditions mattered.
Instead of allowing that setback to compromise his qualifying, the 39-year-old found his rhythm quickly, consistently featuring towards the sharp end as the rain turned Interlagos into a test of nerve and precision.

"Typical, classic Sao Paulo I guess. You never know when the shower is going to hit you and how hard it is," said Hulkenberg.
"But very happy obviously after yesterday, good recovery and I guess the rain helped a bit as well to make up for that lack of running yesterday. But I was happy, confident with the car, managed to produce good laps and yeah, feels nice, feels good."
The satisfaction was understandable. Audi has struggled to establish itself among the frontrunners this season, making Hulkenberg's performance a particularly welcome breakthrough.
Starting fourth also gives the team a genuine opportunity to challenge for a substantial points haul rather than simply hoping to pick up the pieces behind the leading outfits.
‘All to play for’ in Sunday's showdown
Naturally, Hulkenberg was not about to start making extravagant promises before the lights go out. But neither was he prepared to treat his strong grid position as an opportunity merely to defend.
Asked what might be possible in the Grand Prix, he made it clear that Audi would be looking to exploit every opportunity.
"We have to see," he said. "All to play for obviously, we're starting in a good position, try to race clean and get the maximum out of it tomorrow."
That ambition will be particularly important if Sunday's weather continues to play tricks on the field.
Interlagos has already demonstrated how quickly fortunes can change, and Hulkenberg's experience could prove invaluable in a race where patience and aggression will need to coexist.

There was considerably less to celebrate on the other side of the Audi garage. Home favourite Gabriel Bortoleto suffered an early exit from qualifying after losing control at Turn 12, sliding across the wet grass and into the barriers.
Although he managed to return to the pits, damage to his rear wing ended his session.
"Very disappointed with myself," the Brazilian admitted.
"[It] was tough. I messed up, was early in the Qualifying, I locked up a bit, went straight in the grass and I couldn't stop the car in time before hitting the wall," said Bortoleto.
"Obviously then I had rear wing issues, or damage, and I couldn't continue."
