Michael King Rumors, PCA’s Best Catch, Morejon as a Starter, Bartolo Blast, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Yesterday was a quiet day in baseball, and unfortunately, we’ll likely see a lot more of those this winter once the lockout begins. The biggest news of the day was the Platinum Glove Awards, which were announced on Friday night.

Speaking of the Platinum Glove, here’s a replay of Pete Crow-Armstrong’s insane catch in Philadelphia from earlier this year. He made a dozen insane plays in center field this season, but this may have been the best defensive highlight of his MVP campaign. I’m sure you’ve all seen this a bunch already, but what’s one more? After all, it’s not like we can watch any live baseball for the next several months.

— MLB (@MLB) November 7, 2026 Any other PCA catch stand out for you this year? Which was your favorite? Cody Bellinger is currently the only player in MLB history with an MVP Award and a Platinum Glove. That is, until Pete Crow-Armstrong joins him this Thursday with his first MVP award.

— AT (@BaseballWRLD_) November 7, 2026 It’s pretty crazy to think about Bellinger’s career thus far. He started with superstar aspirations, winning the Rookie of the Year and MVP during his first three seasons in MLB. Then, after the 2020 World Series, Bellinger had an abysmal two years in LA, posting a -0.3 fWAR in 239 games. He went on to sign a pillow deal with the Cubs, which went better than anyone expected and led to an even bigger, opt-out-heavy second deal with Chicago. He lasted only one additional year in Chicago … traded to the Yankees in a salary dump … before promptly breaking back out. The 31-year-old has now earned 9.6 fWAR across two seasons in the Bronx, along with an All-Star game appearance and a Platinum Glove award. Baseball is a really weird sport sometimes. Eric Hosmer said on MLB Network that his ideal offseason acquisition for the Cubs is Michael King, whom the Cubs pursued last winter. In the end, they were unwilling to offer a contract that King considered better than the three-year deal (including two player options) that the Padres offered him. King posted a 3.21 ERA across 185.0 innings in 2026, with a hard-hit rate of 32.7% that ranked in the 89th percentile. His best work came in the playoffs, when King allowed just one run in 14 innings, including a one-hit masterclass against the Cubs in which he carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 6, 2026 As is the case with every free agent pitcher, there are warning signs to consider for King. Not only has his strikeout rate decreased, but his whiff rate and in-zone rate have also dropped by 1.3% and 1.6%, respectively. He would still fit well with the Cubs’ archetype and team structure, especially with a groundball rate of 45.1%, but there’s no need to overpay for someone of King’s caliber.

Michael King's strikeout rate has decreased each of the last four seasons. Here are the only other pitchers to do so, as well as their 2026 ERA (min. 50 IP)* Zac Gallen (6.07)* Seth Lugo (5.17)* Taylor Rogers (4.33)* Aaron Civale (4.20)A warning sign for his free agency?

— Foolish Baseball (@FoolishBB) November 6, 2026 Alex Cohen and Elie Menaker also mentioned King as an option for the Cubs, along with David Bednar and Adrian Morejon (both of whom were on Michael’s list of top-10 free agent relievers for the Cubs to target this offseason). The latter, Morejon, feels like a particularly compelling target for the Cubs this offseason, especially if he can really return to starting. Morejon has been connected to the Cubs quite a bit offseason (all speculative). Here’s part of what Brett had to say last time we discussed:

The 27-year-old lefty is coming off of three years of absolute dominance in the late-innings of the Padres’ bullpen: 223.1 IP, 2.58 ERA, 2.46 FIP, 27.3% K, 7.3% BB, 0.40 HR/9, 6.2 WAR. Assuming his late-year arm issues were minor and recoverable over an offseason (and the Qualifying Offer the Padres gave him suggest they have no concerns), Morejon figures to continue dominating for some team in the years ahead. Why not the Cubs? There’s a reason Michael had him atop the list of preferred reliever targets this offseason, and right near the top of the overall free agent list, too.

Well, four of six folks at MLB Trade Rumors and CBS Sports, when putting together their free agency lists, seem to see that connection: Mike Axisa, Matt Snyder, Steve Adams, and Anthony Franco all guessed Morejon to the Cubs when putting together those lists. To be sure, that doesn’t MEAN anything definitive, but it’s interesting to see the connection made so consistently.

At first blush, you may find yourself wondering why the Cubs would even consider giving a huge contract *AND* losing their second and fifth highest draft picks *AND* losing $1 million in international bonus pool space to sign a reliever when that’s an area where they have a lot of returning arms, and comparatively fewer questions than in the rotation. I could answer that by pointing out the many questions among those returning bullpen arms or by reiterating that Morejon is utterly dominant, but I prefer to go another route: if the Cubs sign Morejon, it would be with an idea that they could return him to starting.

Morejon made starts in the minor leagues as recently as 2023, and came up as a starting pitcher prospect. With four quality pitches and some durability, you don’t have to stretch too far to suggest he might be able to be a starting pitcher again, a la some other free agency re-conversions we’ve seen in recent years. How much would you love to see the upside of Adrian Morejon as a starting pitcher added to the Cubs’ rotation? They do love lefty starters, after all, and they certainly need some more swing-and-miss.

There is not NO risk in converting Morejon into a starting pitcher. If it doesn’t work out, you can’t just assume he’ll convert flawlessly back into an impact reliever. But this may all be worth it nonetheless. Crow-Armstrong continued his college football tour on Saturday, joining Ryan Rolison and Ian Happ in Oxford for Ole Miss’ matchup against Georgia (which did not go well for the Rebels, who lost 42-7). This comes just two weeks after those three attended a Texas game with Alex Bregman.
