The University of Tennessee women went 1:24.76 in the women’s 200 freestyle relay at the inaugural CSL Championship on Fridayto become the third program in history to go under 1:25, and they broke the SEC record in the process.

Auburn held the conference mark at 1:25.41 from 2020. Friday’s relay also reset the Tennessee school record of 1:26.16 from the same race when the Volunteers won their first SEC women’s team title.

Perhaps more significantly, Tennessee was able to do what no other team has been able to do in five years: beat the six-time defending NCAA champions Virginia in a 200 freestyle relay. The last time Virginia lost this race was at the 2021 Tennessee Invite to Alabama. Olympians Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh bookended that team for the Hoos. Cal are the only other program to break 1:25 in the event with the 1:24.55 they swam at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

Since 2021, the Virginia women have utilized their sprinting prowess to rewrite the record books in numerous events, though the bedrock of their success has been their sprint freestylers. Gretchen Walsh holds the 50 and 100 freestyle records in yards and became the first woman to to split under 20 seconds, but former Virginia swimmers including Kate Douglass, Jasmine Nocentini, and Lexi Cuomo have all contributed to a strong sprinting legacy in Charlottesville.

Tennessee rewrote the SEC record books thanks to a team effort. Jillian Crooks led them off in a lifetime best, resetting her best time for the second time this season. Leah Tigert was well under her flat start best of 22.15 set later in the same session. This is the first season racing yards for the Canadian freshman, so there may be more time for her to drop this year. Camille Spink split 20.69 on the third leg and would go on to place second in the 50 and win the 100 freestyle. She is fresh off a 45.91 from CSL Match 6 to become the 9th fastest woman in history in the 100 free. Charlotte Crush was heroic for the Volunteers Friday anchoring this relay. She won the 100 back and Super Skins relay while placing second in the 200 back and was part of the third place 200 medley relay. Her 49.06 in the 100 backstroke was a new best time.

With tonight’s swim, Tennessee slotted second in the NCAA rankings just behind the 1:24.73 Virginia posted to win CSL Match 4 in early October. Anna Moesch was notably absent for Virginia, reportedly battling illness this week. Moesch has been outstanding over the last 12 months, finishing as runner-up in the 100 freestyle at the 2026 NCAA Championships and briefly holding the American record in long course this year. She split 20.93 on the 2 free relay at CSL Match 4 as part her team’s NCAA-leading mark.
