Grant Bellin from University Place, Washington, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley, for the 2028-29 school year and beyond. He wrote on social media:
I always knew I was a bear… After numerous calls, visits and discussions, I have decided to follow my Dad’s footsteps and continue my swimming & academic career at UC Berkeley! The amount of dedication my grandparents (my #1 fans), parents & coaches have put into my swimming career is simply extraordinary, and I want to give them the credit they deserve. Coach Durden, Noah & Maya all welcomed me into their family to become a future cal bear and I am incredibly thankful to have been given this opportunity. GOOOO BEEAARRSSS!!!
The top backstroker in the cohort by a wide margin, Bellin is the #9-ranked recruit on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimmers in the high school class of 2028. He will follow his father, Daniel (Cal) and his sisters, Gabi (UC Davis) and Gretta (UC Santa Cruz) as a member of the swimming and diving team at a University of California campus.
Bellin is a junior at Curtis High School. He does his year-round swimming with King Aquatic Club and was recently named to the 2026-27 USA Swimming National Junior Team. He is coming off a stellar long-course season that saw him compete in the 50/100 free and 50/100/200 back at U.S. Nationals, where he notched PBs in the 50 free (24.07), 50 back (25.84), 100 back (55.61), and 200 back (2:01.52) and finaled in all three backstrokes (19th in the 50/100 and 24th in the 200). A week later, he swam the same 5 events at U.S. Junior Nationals. He was runner-up in the 100/200 back and came in 4th in the 50 back, closing out the summer with updated times in the 100 (55.03) and 200 (2:00.25). Those are big improvements from a year ago, when he wrapped the 2025 long-course season with PBs of 58.07 and 2:03.55 in the same events.
In SCY, Bellin owns the top 100 and 200 backstroke times in the class, with 47.74 and 1:42.72. He earned both times, along with the 50/100 free, 50 back, and 100 fly, at Bellevue Club’s Premier Invitational last March. There, he won the 200 back (1:42.72), was runner-up in the 100 back (47.75), and placed 6th in the 100 free (45.53). He earned PBs in the 50 free (21.20), 50 back (22.63), and 100 back (47.74) leading off KING relays, and in the 200 free (1:42.23) and 100 fly (50.00) in prelims.
Bellin is the first public commitment to the Golden Bears’ class of 2032. He will continue the elite backstroke tradition that has made Cal famous, following in the footsteps of recent Bears Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley, Destin Lasco, Keaton Jones, Bryce Mefford, and Daniel Carr.
