ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Construction is underway on the next piece of Rochester’s “Roc the Riverway Initiative.”
Local leaders broke ground on Genesee Crossroads Park, located along the east side of the Genesee River next to the Sister Cities Bridge. The city has a multi-phase plan to revitalize the park.
This first phase will improve access to the river, including full ADA accessibility. Phase two will include a trail connection to East Main Street.
News10NBC reporter Declan Stablow was at the scene and spoke with residents about the ongoing projects. Genesee Crossroads Park is the latest Roc the Riverway project, and it sits near other completed projects including the Sister Cities Bridge and Austin Steward Plaza.
Martin Coker, who lives in Rochester, said it’s great to have spaces to unwind and spend time with family. “It helps the city because it gives them something to look at, somewhere to play at, somewhere safe, and it gives people hope you know that change can come,” Coker said.
Stablow met Coker at Austin Steward Park, named after a famous abolitionist who lived in the area. Coker said coming to the park made him want to learn more about who Austin Steward was.
“As a black man it gives me something to look at and be inspired by, and wonder who this person is, and why he has his name on a plaza or a park, its pretty cool,” Coker said.
These are just a few examples of the work being done in downtown Rochester. Not far from Genesee Crossroads Park, the city convention center is being renovated and phase two of the Roc City Skate Park broke ground last year.
New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said the projects give a financial boost to the area. “It really has a manifestation of reinvigorating not only the immediate area, but also having a tertiary effect on the local businesses, local residents and those who work down here, to create an open space,” Mosley said.
Outside the Roc the Riverway project, new owners of the First Federal Building downtown are turning it into a mixed-use building and taking input from the community about what to do with the UFO-shaped top floor. Mosley also said it’s important to revitalize the area to give people a sense of community, which he said helps the city’s overall mental health.
“The mental well-being to anybody is how much you’re able to enjoy the present. You know, being present where you are. So the more opportunities you create for men, women and children to get off line, the healthier we believe their mental health is,” Mosley said.
More Roc the Riverway projects are coming. This fall, construction is expected to begin to turn Rochester’s High Falls Terrace Park into High Falls State Park, which will be state-run and offer better views of the falls.
