Sebastian Vettel’s return to the Formula 1 paddock at Monza on Sunday became far more than a nostalgic appearance when the four-time world champion climbed into one of Michael Schumacher’s most iconic Ferraris.
Thirty years after Schumacher began his Ferrari journey, Vettel brought a piece of that extraordinary legacy back to life by taking the F2002 – the car in which Schumacher dominated the 2002 season – around the Temple of Speed.
The German delighted the packed Italian crowd with an honorary lap before adding a handful of donuts to an already emotional occasion.
For Vettel, however, this was never simply about driving a legendary Formula 1 car. Schumacher had been his boyhood hero, and the connection between the two Germans had carried enormous significance throughout Vettel’s own career.
When he finally climbed out of the Ferrari, the emotions were impossible to disguise.
“It felt like I had won the race before it even started,” Vettel joked.
Schumacher's presence felt in every lap
The F2002 may have been a piece of Ferrari history, but for Vettel it was also a deeply personal link to the man whose achievements had helped inspire his own journey into Formula 1.
“I’m mixed up in feelings,” Vettel told F1 TV. “On the one hand it’s such a beautiful car to drive, such a beautiful piece of machinery, but much more it’s Michael’s car.
“He’s not here today but I felt him a lot in these laps and I hope you heard him and felt him as well. It’s incredible. Thank you for the opportunity and thanks to the Tifosi.
“I love racing. I know that I quit racing but in my heart I’m still a lover and I do deeply care for this sport, for these cars, for these people, for the Tifosi, for the fans that make this sport so special.
“That’s why I see there’s a real power to propel it forward for the future. I look forward to everything that’s coming but today is Michael’s moment and we send all our love and our emotions to him.”
It was a striking reminder of just how deeply Schumacher remains woven into Vettel’s memories of Formula 1. Yet the F2002 itself also appeared to awaken something in the retired champion.
An unforgettable Ferrari experience
The visceral character of Schumacher’s Ferrari immediately made an impression on Vettel, who admitted he was torn between unleashing its performance and preserving a moment he knew he could never replicate.
“It’s so exciting. It doesn’t take many laps to sense the soul of a car and you sense immediately that it’s a special car. It’s just screaming at you like ‘go, go, go’,” he said.
“I was doing some donuts here and at the second Variante and people were excited. I was all the time torn between ‘I want to push this car’ and I want to enjoy the moment and make it last.
“It’s been absolutely beautiful and to feel how alive Michael’s spirit is, and how alive Ferrari’s spirit is around here, I experienced it years ago… There’s bits that I miss but it’s a different life and looking after the next generation of drivers, there’s great opportunities ahead. It’s a very emotional day.”
The tribute formed part of Ferrari’s wider celebration of Schumacher, marking three decades since his first season with the Scuderia in 1996. The team has also dressed both of its SF-26 cars in a special livery inspired by the F310, Schumacher’s first Ferrari.

For a few precious minutes, Monza was not simply remembering one of Ferrari’s greatest champions. Through his former protege and admirer, it felt as though Schumacher’s spirit was being allowed to race once more.
