2026 RUSSIAN SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Friday, November 6th – Wednesday, November 11th Nevskaya Volna Water Sports Center, St. Petersburg, Russia SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Live ResultsThe 2026 Russian Short Course National Championships are officially underway, with the six-day competition having kicked off today, Friday, November 6th.
Not only are national titles on the line, but swimmers will also be vying for slots on the country’s roster for this December’s Short Course World Championships. According to the Russian selection policy, swimmers need to meet or exceed the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard in their respective events in order to make the grade for Beijing next month.
Right off the bat, 17-year-old Ksenia Misharina staked her claim on the women’s 400m freestyle event, firing off a time of 4:00.59 to grab the gold.
That registered a new Russian Age Record for the budding star, erasing the former record of 4:01.16 Sofya Dyakova put on the books in 2024.
Dyakova was indeed in the race, settling for silver in 4:03.28, as Anna Arshavskaya rounded out the podium in 4:06.57.
The top two performers dipped under the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 4:06.27 needed for the event, with Misharina in particular standing out after having hacked over a second off her previous PB of 4:01.98 from last year’s edition of this competition. The teen sits just outside the list of top 5 performers in the world on the season.
Irina Zvyagintseva got it done for gold in the women’s 200m IM, posting a speedy result of 4:07.93 to beat the field by nearly two seconds.
The next-closest swimmer was Viktoriya Mashkina, who registered a silver medal-worthy outing of 2:09.67, followed closely by Yana Shakirova, who bagged the bronze in 2:09.82.
Only Zvyagintseva’s swim was worthy of making the potential World Championships roster.
The men’s 200m IM final saw Mikhail Shcherbakov strike gold, producing a solid outing of 1:53.02 to deny Ilya Borodin the top spot.
Borodin settled for silver in 1:54.52, as Sergey Isaev finished in 3rd place in 1:55.01.
The men were chasing a World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 1:55.25, a threshold under which all three men dipped in the race.
Shcherbakov’s result was within striking distance of his lifetime best of 1:52.21, which he logged in December of last year, while Borodin has been as quick as 1:52.75 in his career.
Additional Notes
World Record holder Egor Kornev dove in for the semi-final of the men’s 50m fly, where he captured the top seed in a swift time of 21.95, the sole swim of the pack under the 22-second barrier. Kornev owns the World Record from the 21.28 he produced on the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup circuit last month. Oleg Kostin is very much in the mix, courtesy of his semi swim of 22.29, with Andrei Minakov (22.43) and Danill Markov (22.46) also making the top tier of the final. Arina Surkova is the woman to catch in the 50m fly event, reaping the top seed out of the semi-finals with a time of 25.13. She and 2nd-seeded Alexandra Kuznetsova (25.46) are already beneath the ‘A’ standard of 25.72 needed for Beijing, but they’ll need to put up the same caliber of performances in tomorrow night’s final to add their names to the Russian roster. Additionally, they’ll need to get into the 24-second range if they want to enter the top 5 rankings on the season. The women’s 100m back semi-final saw Alina Gaifutdinova score the pole position, hitting 57.82 for the sole outing of the field under 58 seconds. Behind her was Sofia Maslova, who turned in 58.28, followed by Milana Stepanova‘s effort of 58.39. Pavel Samusenko landed lane four for tomorrow night’s final of the men’s 100m backstroke, courtesy of his time of 49.07. That represented the 2nd-best time of his career, sitting only behind his PB of 48.78 notched in St. Petersburg last December. Olympic medalist Kliment Kolesnikov is not to be counted out, sitting as the 2nd seed in 50.29. Georgy Yakovlev is also ready to fight for Worlds qualification, with his time of 50.70 capturing the 3rd slot. Samusenko remains the 3rd-fastest man on the planet this season, although tonight’s performance overtook the 49.17 he registered during the Tashkent stop of the World Cup.2026-2027 SCM MEN 100 BACK
