One more before the Bears’ bye week, and it’ll be under the lights at Soldier Field against the Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football. Chicago enters with a 6-2 record, unbeaten since Caleb Williams returned from his hamstring injury, and looking to sweep the primetime slate over the previous three weeks.
But they’ll have to take on the league’s top rushing attack first, again. That was the case when they took on the Falcons three weeks ago, and Dennis Allen and a shorthanded unit answered the bell, in a big way. If they can do so again this week, with the best version of the defense we’ve seen all season, the Bears could head into their bye week with a 7-2 record, and a perfect 4-0 mark in primetime games this season.
Three Bears: Week 9’s Picks to Click
Patrick Flowers: Jeffery Simmons — By now, you don’t need a recap of Simmons’ Bears debut, but we’d surely take an encore. Against a Tampa team that won by rushing for 324 yards and completing zero passes last week, Chicago will need it. Beating the Bucs on Sunday Night Football this week would set the Bears up perfectly at 7-2 heading into the bye week (and the trade deadline next Tuesday afternoon), a place that’s even more impressive when you consider Caleb Williams missed three games due to a hamstring injury.
Simmons was the catalyst for a defense that went into Seattle last week and absolutely wrecked the Seahawks’ plans. Simmons stuffed the stat sheet, but his impact on the players around him was even more important. His old college teammate Montez Sweat, Austin Booker, James Lynch, Kyler Gordon, and even linebacker Devin Bush flashed on the screen all night, turning in their best concerted effort all season.
Baker Mayfield is still nursing that fractured throwing thumb, and has attempted 14 passes in two games since returning. It’s doubtful Tampa tries the three-pass-attempts trick again this week, but you can probably still expect a heavy dose of Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell. Simmons, in the middle of Chicago’s defensive line, will be asked to set the tone again on Sunday.

Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-Imagn ImagesMatt Rooney: Garrett Bradbury — Notice how we haven’t been talking about Bradbury as much over the past few weeks? That’s a good thing. While he’s still not perfect, he’s been gelling more and more with Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson as the weeks have gone on, and he’s doing a great job being the quarterback of that offensive line.
Logan Jones will eventually take over, likely next season, but after a rough start to the campaign, Garrett Bradbury has gotten better and been a steady, veteran presence at a position that requires one. Last week, on a silent count, against the Seahawks defense in the loudest environment in football was a perfect example of that.
While the Bears play at home this week and the crowd will be in their favor, they’re facing another very good defense with an experienced playcaller and a lot of skilled veterans. Bradbury will have to be that calming, steady presence again and keep leading the Bears offensive line against a defense that’s firing on all cylinders right now.

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn ImagesLuis C. Medina: Caleb Williams — Tom Brady says he looks forward to seeing what QB1 has in store for Week 9. That makes (at least) two of us. Williams has been a joy to watch in prime viewing spots (Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, and island night games) in the regular season during the Ben Johnson era. These are his numbers:
145/243 (59.7%) 1,501 passing yards 10 TD 1 INT 89.5 passer ratingThe accuracy numbers could be better. But a 10-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio makes a sub-60 percent completion rate and passer rating under 90 something I can live with — especially if it comes with wins.
