ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Iconic feminist activist Gloria Steinem has died.
Her family says she died at her home in New York City on Wednesday. A pioneer in the fight for women’s rights for seven decades, she shares a lot in common with Rochester’s own Susan B. Anthony.
News10NBC asked leaders at the Susan B. Anthony Museum what they find inspirational about these two women.
“There were other issues in Susan’s time that Gloria Steinem was fighting for many many decades later. And I think what Gloria means for the women of today is that this is an ongoing, multi-generational process in the fight for women’s rights,” said Taylor Phillips, director of education at the museum.
“They’re both feminist icons and leaders in their own time, but they were also just everyday women doing everyday things, and I think that’s inspiring to us as women today,” Phillips said.
Gloria Steinem helped create multiple magazines and brought a mainstream focus to women’s issues. Steinem was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her tireless drive for equality.
She was 92.
