A 2-year-old has died and the child’s mother has been hospitalized after police said she attempted self-harm in what they’re calling a “domestic-related homicide” in Frankfort.
According to police, officers were called just after 4 p.m. Tuesday to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court for a report of an unresponsive child. There, they found a 2-year-old at the home and CPR was being administered.
The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead, police said.
Also at the home, police said the child’s mother was discovered attempting self-harm. She was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the incident was a “domestic-related homicide.”
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” police said. “We encourage our community to support one another with compassion, understanding, and strength as we navigate this difficult time together.”
Police said an investigation remained ongoing.
Neighbors told Chavarria that police had been at the home since late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening hours.
“This is just absolutely heartbreaking to understand what happened a couple blocks away and that it’s impacting our community,” said Carolyn Pappas, who lives around the block from where the incident took place.
Pappas, a parent herself, said the investigation has stunned the local community.
“This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community. You never think it’s going to hit so close to home,” she said. “And so yeah, that absolutely makes us think of that. And again, just more people I think are struggling than we realize and so we just need to be there for one another.”
She said it serves as a wake-up call that “someone could be suffering potentially so badly next door and we don’t know that.”
“I think it’s an opportunity for us all, you know, check on one another and make sure that we’re all there for one another and that we don’t allow this to happen again,” she said.
Frankfort, in Will and Cook Counties, is approximately 36 miles south of Chicago.
