Quentin Tarantino has built a fortune estimated at $150 million, but he has no plans to share it with his mother. The Oscar-winning filmmaker says he made that decision as a child after his mom, Connie Zastoupil, criticized his writing ambitions.
“My mom always had a hard time about my scholastic nonability,” Tarantino, 63, recalled during a 2021 appearance on “The Moment” podcast. Fortune revisited the interview on Wednesday, October 28.
The Pulp Fiction director said his mother would regularly criticize him for writing screenplays instead of focusing on his schoolwork. One argument, however, left a lasting impression.
Tarantino recalled Zastoupil, now 80, going on a “little tirade” about his decisions growing up. He recalled her sarcastically dismissing his writing, telling him, “‘Oh, and by the way, this little writing career,’ with the finger quotes and everything. ‘This little writing career that you’re doing? That s*** is over.’”
Tarantino took his mother’s words to heart and promised himself that she would never benefit financially from his career.
“When she said that to me in that sarcastic way, I was in my head, and I go, ‘OK, lady, when I become a successful writer, you will never see one penny from my success,’” Tarantino told podcast host Brian Koppelman. “‘There will be no house for you. There’s no vacation for you, no Elvis Cadillac for mommy. You get nothing because you said that.’”
Decades later, Tarantino confirmed he had followed through on that promise. When Koppelman, 60, asked whether he had stuck to his word, the filmmaker replied, “Yeah.”
He did clarify that he had helped his mother out of a financial bind involving the IRS. However, he maintained that he had never bought her a house or a Cadillac.
Koppelman speculated that his mother’s disapproval might have helped motivate Tarantino’s success. The filmmaker, though, argued that parents’ words can have lasting consequences, especially when they dismiss something their children care about.
“There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children,” Tarantino said. “Remember there are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”
