Taken: Natalee Holloway premieres Wednesday, Nov. 4, on Netflix. The three-part series, directed by Dani Sloane and Matthew Galkin, offers exclusive access to investigators, never-before-seen footage, and an account from Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway.
View this post on InstagramAccording to Netflix, the documentary explores previously unreported elements of the investigation and Beth’s “unrelenting search for truth and justice.” Whether it will offer new information about where Natalee’s remains are located remains to be seen.
What Happened to Natalee Holloway?
Natalee was 18 when she traveled to Aruba with classmates in May 2005 to celebrate their high school graduation. She was last seen leaving a nightclub in Oranjestad with Joran van der Sloot and two other young men in the early hours of May 30. She never boarded her scheduled flight home.
The disappearance triggered an extensive investigation and years of international media coverage. Van der Sloot, the prime suspect, was arrested multiple times but was not charged in connection with Natalee’s disappearance at the time. Though her remains have never been found, she was declared legally dead in 2012.
Joran van der Sloot’s Confession
In October 2023, van der Sloot admitted to killing Natalee as part of a federal plea agreement involving charges of extortion and wire fraud. He told investigators that he attacked her on a beach after she rejected his sexual advances, struck her with a cinder block, and pushed her body into the sea.
The plea agreement stemmed from a 2010 scheme in which van der Sloot sought money from Beth in exchange for information about her daughter’s remains. He ultimately provided information he later described as “worthless.” He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the federal offenses, running concurrently with his sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores.
Van der Sloot was not convicted of Natalee’s murder in the U.S. case.
A Mother’s 21-Year Search for Answers
For Beth, the confession brought some answers after more than two decades of uncertainty, but it did not resolve every question surrounding her daughter’s disappearance.
“The never-ending nightmare is over, and to me, that’s better than closure,” Beth told CBS News after the 2023 court proceedings.
The new docuseries revisits the case through her perspective, alongside investigators and others connected to Natalee’s final hours. Director Dani Sloane said the story goes beyond the “wall-to-wall coverage and sensational headlines” to examine the “incredible courage, devotion, and strength” Beth showed in the face of loss.
More than two decades later, Taken: Natalee Holloway will hopefully shed new light on the questions that continue to haunt the Holloway family.
