Chicago-area cardiologist Dr. Lisa Nee announced her campaign for Mayor of Chicago Tuesday. The announcement describes Nee as an “outsider to machine politics” and a cardiologist, mother, wife and business executive.
Nee is also a former whistleblower at the Hines Veterans Administration hospital in the western suburbs, her campaign says.
“I’m running because I believe we deserve a city where public service actually serves the public —where affordability is a reality, not a talking point, where you don’t need connections to get basic things done, and where honesty isn’t treated like a liability,” a press release announcing Nee’s candidacy said.
According to her campaign bio, Nee grew up in Humboldt Park and now lives on the North Side with her husband, children and two dogs.
Nee joins an already growing field of Chicago mayoral candidates ahead of the Feb. 23, 2027 election. Prior to Nee’s announcement, the latest candidate to throw his hat in the ring was former Chicago Housing Authority board chair and CEO Matt Brewer. Others that have announced mayoral campaigns include Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Congressman Mike Quigley, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas.
Journalist William Kelly and business owners Joe Holberg and Liam Stanton have also announced their bids.
Several other candidates are also weighing potential runs, including Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who has a war chest of more than $20 million, sources have told NBC Chicago political reporter Mary Ann Ahern.
Notably, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson himself has not said whether he will seek reelection, though it appears likely he will.
