Mother whose child vanished 43 years ago believes her daughter is alive ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

On this day 43 years ago, a toddler mysteriously vanished from her South Side home, but her mother holds out hope her daughter is living a healthy, happy life.

For decades, Kathy Teague has believed her daughter was abducted and is living somewhere in the world, with no knowledge of her past.

Vinyette Teague was just 18 months old when she last seen on June 25,, 1983. She’d been playing in the hallway outside of the family’s apartment at the Robert Taylor Homes. A large group, including some family members, was also there.

Her grandmother left her alone for a few minutes when she returned, Vinyette was gone.

Kathy says they searched for days–every floor, every building but no sign of her daughter. The housing development in the Bronzeville neighborhood has since been demolished, but the mystery remains unsolved.

“I believe in my heart that she is somewhere living,” said Kathy. “I believe whoever took her is taking good care of her and she does not even know she is missing. Everybody that was there that day my mom, my sister and cousin, they have since passed on. I believe someone saw an opportunity to take a baby by the hallway, and they just took her.”

In a sad twist to this heartbreaking story, Kathy says over the years, she’s been contacted by several women who thought they were her daughter.

“The first four, they were nice, but there is this one particular one, she was terrible. The detective talked to her and found out she was not my daughter,” she said.

Pam Childs is a retired Chicago police detective who works on cold cases.

“Miss Kathy has lived a full life without her baby,” said Childs. “I don’t think that anybody took a small baby like that to hurt it. Whoever was in that building at the time took that baby because they wanted a baby. And I’ve told Miss Kathy this. In my heart of hearts, I believe that Vinette is alive.”
