One of Chicago’s most famous museums will be closed to the public Thursday to support the grand opening of the new, highly anticipated Obama Presidential Center.
“Welcome to the South Side, Obama Presidential Center!”, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry said in a post on social media. “We’re excited to have a new neighbor and to celebrate another place where inspiration, curiosity, and community come together in Chicago.”
The center, located at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave. in Jackson Park, is steps away from the Griffin Museum of Science. The ticketed museum officially opens to the public on Juneteenth, with a star-studded, private grand opening ceremony featuring Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and Christina Aguilera Thursday.

According to the post the Griffin MSI will be closed to the public “in support of the Obama Center’s Grand Opening Dedication Ceremony.”
The museum will reopen to the public Friday, Juneteenth with a free admission day for Illinois residents. The museum’s 93rd birthday also falls on Friday, the post said.
Anyone who already purchased a ticket to the Museum of Science and Industry for June 18 will receive an automatic refund and a 30% discount toward a future visit, a museum spokesperson said in a previous statement.
“As neighboring institutions rooted in education, community and public engagement, we believe this moment represents an important milestone for the South Side and our city,” the statement said in part.
