Chicago Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez said he believes it was “an act of intimidation” when someone set off an explosion outside his home in Pilsen.
“There was an explosion in the middle of the night. That is unprecedented. I never had felt vulnerable in my own home,” Sigcho-Lopez told NBC Chicago.
Sigcho-Lopez, who represents the 25th Ward, shared surveillance video of the incident, which happened near West 21st Street and South Wolcott Avenue before 1 a.m. on Saturday. The video shows an SUV pull up, then a man gets out, sets the explosive device and leaves. A neighbor told NBC 5 Chicago it sounded like thunder when a burst of sound and flash of light went off, while families were already asleep.
“We thought at first that maybe it was a transformer because of the storms. Maybe a tree fell off because we can see the windows shattered,” Sigcho-Lopez said.
Chicago police are investigating. They suspect the explosive device was a firework. No one was hurt.
Sigcho-Lopez’s three children were asleep inside his home at the time.
“I think that we got to understand: What is the motive? To me, it seems to be an act of intimidation where an explosive is deployed in the middle of the night when you have children at home,” he said.
He questioned whether the incident was politically motivated.
“I spoke with the superintendent and I spoke with the mayor about what has happened. It is important that we get to the bottom of it,” Sigcho-Lopez said.
His 25th Ward office is asking anyone with more information or video to contact the office or police.
The Chicago City Council Latino Caucus released a statement denouncing political violence and saying the caucus stands in solidarity with Sigcho-Lopez.
“What Alderperson Sigcho Lopez, his children and his wife faced over the weekend is indefensible, and it is something that each one of us feels,” the statement said, in part.
