2026 GREEK CHAMPIONSHIPS
May 15th – May 18th Athens, Greece LCM (50m) ResultsShortly before the controversial Enhanced Games took place, where Greek Olympian Kristian Gkolomeev cleared the non-enhanced world record in the 50m free, his countryman Andreas Vazaios made some noise on their home soil.
Racing at last week’s Greek Championships, 32-year-old Vazaios quietly broke the national record in the men’s 100m freestyle.
Leading off his squad’s men’s 4x100m free relay, Vazaios, formerly of NC State, ripped a lifetime best of 48.31 to help his team take the gold in a final result of 3:18.56.
Vazaios opened in 22.85 and closed in 25.46 to establish the new mark, slicing .08 off the former Greek standard Olympic medalist Apostolos Christou put on the books at the 2021 European Championships.
Christou’s former record was also set as lead-off on the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, with splits including 23.12/25.27.
Entering these Greek Championships, Vazaios’ lifetime best in the 100m free rested at the 48.65 he notched as lead-off on the same relay at the 2020 Olympic Games. That marked his 2nd time under the 49-second barrier, as he hit 48.93 at the 2021 Swim Open Stockholm. He was also under the barrier in 48.98 at the 2022 edition of that Swedish affair.
When it came to the individual 100m free at these Greek Championships, Vazaios fell short of his newly minted 48.31 record, instead posting 49.23 to place 2nd behind winner Stergios Marios-Bilas, who grabbed the gold in 49.17.
Vazaios is a three-time European Long Course Championships medalist, including 200m IM champion at the 2016 edition.
After his NC State years, he raced for both Loughborough University in England while working towards a degree there and also competed for the London Roar during season two of the International Swimming League (ISL).
Vazaios’ 48.31 effort represents the 6th Greek national record to bite the dust thus far in 2026. At the Giant Open in March, Artemis Vasilaki hit new marks in the women’s 400m free (4:10.57) and 800m free (8:32.29). Then, at the Acropolis Swim Open earlier this month, Apostolos Siskos established new standards in the 200m back (1:54.12) and 200m fly (1:56.13) and Andromachi Tasakou logged a new record of 1:08.16 in the women’s 100m breast.
