An Illinois high school baseball player was struck and killed in by a line drive during baseball practice in what school officials called a “tragic accident”

March 2, Bentley Wolfe 15, of Chrisman, was at baseball practice when he was struck in the head by a line drive baseball, the Peoria County Coroner said. Wolfe, who was a sophomore at Chrisman High School in Edgar County, was transported to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria the following day in critical condition.

Despite “aggressive” care and treatment, Bentley was pronounced brain dead at 5:49 p.m. March 6, the coroner said.

An autopsy revealed Bentley suffered “detrimental head trauma due to blunt force trauma.”

A prayer vigil was held at Chrisman High School last Friday, according to a social post from school officials. Another social media post from the school said the “outpouring” of support for Wolfe from nearby communities and neighboring teams has been “overwhelming.”

Chrisman High School which is located in downstate Illinois close to the Indiana border, did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
