Mississippi State is finalizing a deal to hire Philip Montgomery as its new wide receivers coach and associate head coach for the offense, according to Pete Thamel.
The longtime assistant spent 6 years coaching with head coach Jeff Lebby at Baylor before Montgomery left to become the head coach at Tulsa. Montgomery went 43-53 in 8 years as the head coach of Tulsa. He also reached four bowl games during his time there.
Most recently, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator and then interim head coach at Virginia Tech. The Hookies went 3-6 under Montgomery this past season.

After finishing 1-7 in the SEC last year, Mississippi State will look to be more competitive this next year. Bringing in a veteran assistant in Montgomery is exactly the move a team like the Bulldogs needs.
