Illinois man Adam Beckerink has been formally charged with first-degree murder of his late wife, Cailtin Tracey, after she died in October 2024.
On Tuesday, January 13, Chicago police announced the official charges against Beckerink, 47, more than one year after Tracey was found dead at the bottom of a stairwell in Beckerink’s South Loop condo building.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has since confirmed that Tracey’s death was caused by injuries sustained from a fall from an undetermined height.
The police report stated that the investigation revealed Beckerink threw Tracey down the 29-story stairwell that ultimately led to her death, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Beckerink was previously serving time in Berrien County, Michigan, after he was found guilty on domestic violence charges regarding another incident with Tracey. He was sentenced to serve a 93-day sentence for domestic violence and contempt of court charges in October 2025, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
Following his release from the Michigan jail, Beckerink was arrested and extradited back to Chicago on Monday, January 12, so he can answer to the new charges.
He is now facing a first-degree murder charge, as well as a second murder charge of strong probability of death.
The hearing on January 13 was brief, while attorneys asked that a bond hearing be postponed until Friday, January 16. He is currently in custody at the Cook County Jail until that bond hearing takes place.
Following the hearing, Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke said that Beckerink was arrested by Chicago police “following a lengthy and complex investigation.”
“The couple had a documented history of domestic violence incidents in both Chicago and New Buffalo, Michigan,” O’Neill Burke added.
Tracey’s family also issued a statement following the hearing. “Our family is deeply thankful to the Cook County State’s attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke, and her team, as well as the Chicago Police Department’s Violent Crimes Division,” the family said. “The CPD has worked long and hard to investigate this case.”

“Although the defendant’s criminal convictions and sentence in Michigan brings some measure of justice for Caitlin, this man must now be held accountable for his actions in the days and months that led to this moment: the state’s charge that he murdered our beautiful daughter,” the family continued. “We hope that justice will prevail and we can finally lay our dear Caitlin to rest.”
Prior to Beckerink receiving his new charges, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling told ABC 7 Chicago that the “detective division dedicated hours and days and months to this to make sure that they brought justice to someone by getting this person charged.”
“Sometimes, these things are lengthy,” Snelling continued of the investigation. “They take a little time, and you have to do a lot of digging to make sure that you get the right evidence and build that strong case.”
The Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment.
Prior to her death, Tracey obtained an order of protection against Beckerink in November 2023 after she filed multiple domestic violence reports to the Chicago police, according to Fox 32 Chicago. However, she dropped the order in December of that year after she claimed that he threatened to sue her for defamation.
