The Tennessee Volunteers’ season came to an end Tuesday when they lost 30-28 to Illinois in the Music City Bowl. The Vols finished the year 8-5 and missed out on the College Football Playoff.
It was a disappointing season for the Vols. After a CFP appearance last year, many expected Tennessee to be back in that same position this year with new quarterback Joey Aguilar taking over the reins. Instead, the Vols struggled to beat any of the top teams in the SEC, with their closest game coming against Georgia back in September when they lost 44-41 in overtime.
After the game, head coach Josh Heupel was asked about his task in upgrading the roster through the transfer portal.
“We got to get better, absolutely. But there’s a lot of really good, young talent inside of that locker room,” Heupel said. “One of, if not the youngest teams in our league. There’s an influx of guys that we just signed that are highly talented. Yes, we have to go in the portal and get some guys, too. The talent is one thing, the development of it is the second part of it. But there’s a connection and work mentality and mental toughness and every trait that it takes to go win has got to be developed, as well.
“I feel really good about what we have coming back, what we have coming in, and then we got to go get some guys here in the portal and then we got to go build a football team, which is what you have to do every year when we get back in January.”
It’s clear that Heupel believes in the guys that he has in his locker room and the guys that they are currently bringing in next year. As he said, developing these guys will be a huge part of Tennessee’s offseason.
There’s no doubt the Vols will be looking for talent in the transfer portal to fill gaps in their roster, but it doesn’t sound like Heupel and his staff will be relying on the portal to build the roster.
