UNC Men’s Soccer Scores 7 Goals in Historic Blowout Win vs. Notre Dame ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

After allowing the first goal of the match against Notre Dame Saturday night at Dorrance Field, UNC scored seven unanswered to romp past the Fighting Irish and win 7-1. It’s Carolina’s highest-scoring match since 2021 and its highest-scoring performance against an ACC team since 2000.

UNC’s Joschi Schelb scored the first of UNC’s seven goals in the 28th minute, equalizing at 1-1 after Notre Dame had scored in the seventh minute. Schelb was at it again in the 35th, securing a brace in a span of less than seven minutes. Just 26 seconds after that, Ryan Zellefrow joined the fun with another goal. Carolina led 3-1 at halftime.

The break did nothing to halt the Tar Heels’ momentum. Bertil Rygaard Hansen scored 31 seconds into the second half to extend UNC’s lead to 4-1. It was already Carolina’s highest-scoring effort of the season, but the Tar Heels were far from done. Schelb was at it again in the 50th minute, putting the finishing touches on the first Carolina hat trick this season. Zellefrow bagged his second goal in the 57th minute, and Luca Nikolai made it seven for the Tar Heels with a penalty kick goal in the 82nd.

Schelb’s hat trick gives him 12 goals on the season, by far the most on the team. The reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week is a strong candidate to take home that honor again. Carolina’s seven goals as a team nearly doubled its total from its first four ACC matches combined (eight).

UNC has now won four consecutive matches, during which time the Tar Heels have outscored the opposition 15-3. Carolina had not scored seven goals against an ACC foe since a 7-1 win against NC State in October 2000. That was far from UNC’s most prolific effort that season, though; the Tar Heels had beaten Rider 11-0 just a week earlier.

Carolina is now 6-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they visit No. 10 Pittsburgh Friday at 7 p.m.
