Former UFC Star Shot 3 Times in Deadly Congo Ambush While on Mission for Blackwater Founder’s Security Firm ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy has reportedly survived a deadly ambush in the Democratic Republic of Congo, suffering three gunshot wounds during an attack that left multiple people dead.

Kennedy, 47, was shot in the leg during the Sept. 17 attack in South Kivu, according to an Oct. 9 report from Reuters, which cited three sources familiar with the dangerous operation.

The former UFC middleweight and U.S. Army Green Beret was working under contract with Vectus Global, the company headed by Erik Prince, who founded the controversial private military company Blackwater.

The attack left around 20 people dead or wounded, according to Reuters. At least seven Congolese and a former member of New Zealand’s Special Forces were killed, while Kennedy and another foreign contractor were among those severely injured.

Kennedy survived the attack and was eventually evacuated to the United States for treatment. He is currently being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside D.C.

Who carried out the ambush remains less clear.

Sources working with the Congolese government told Reuters that Rwandan forces backing the M23 rebels may have been responsible, with another source suggesting the attackers could have tracked a surveillance drone to the team’s remote location.

Long before the reported attack, Kennedy was no stranger to dangerous situations.

He served in Army Special Forces and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan before becoming a familiar face in professional MMA. Kennedy competed in both Strikeforce and the UFC, where his opponents included Michael Bisping, Yoel Romero and Kelvin Gastelum.

He retired from professional fighting in 2017 and has made numerous podcast appearances, including the Joe Rogan Experience, where he’s detailed his wild new life outside the octagon.

Neither Kennedy nor Vectus Global had publicly commented on the reported ambush as of Reuters’ Oct. 9 report.
