Tammy Wynette’s Favorite Song Reimagined By ’70s Music Star 50 Years Later for Star-Studded Tribute Concert ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Tammy Wynette recorded some of the most recognizable country songs of the 20th century, from “Stand by Your Man” and “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” to “I Don’t Wanna Play House.”

But when it came to her own favorite, the First Lady of Country Music repeatedly singled out another song: “’Til I Can Make It on My Own.”

Now, 50 years after Wynette released the deeply personal ballad, ’70s music star Debby Boone is giving it new life as part of a star-studded tribute to the late country legend.

Boone performs the song in Great Performances – Tammy Wynette: Forever Yours, which premieres Friday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS. The concert will also be available on PBS.org and the PBS app.

Recorded at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium in March, the special brings together artists from country, rock, Americana and other genres to celebrate Wynette’s music and influence.

Boone, 70, is best known for her 1977 smash “You Light Up My Life,” which spent a remarkable 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song helped make Boone one of the defining new voices of the late 1970s and earned her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. “You Light Up My Life” also made Grammy history when songwriter Joe Brooks tied with Barbra Streisand and Paul Williams for Song of the Year, the only tie ever recorded in one of the Grammys’ Big Four categories.

For the upcoming PBS special, however, Boone is stepping into Wynette’s world with a song that held particular significance for the country legend.

Wynette co-wrote “’Til I Can Make It on My Own” with George Richey and Billy Sherrill and released it in January 1976 as the title track and first single from her album of the same name.

The song became Wynette’s 15th No. 1 country hit, spending one week atop the Billboard country chart and 11 weeks on the chart overall.

But its chart success tells only part of the story.

Wynette said on multiple occasions that “’Til I Can Make It on My Own” was her personal favorite of everything she had written or recorded. It remained a fixture of her live performances throughout the rest of her career.

Other artists have been drawn to the song over the decades as well. Kenny Rogers and Dottie West recorded a duet version that reached No. 3 on the country chart in 1979, while Martina McBride, Billy Gilman and Wynette and George Jones’ daughter Georgette Jones are also among the singers who have subsequently recorded it.

Boone’s rendition is one of more than 20 performances featured in Tammy Wynette: Forever Yours.

Wynonna Judd performs “Woman to Woman” and teams with Randy Houser for Wynette and Jones’ “We’re Gonna Hold On,” while Terri Clark tackles “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” and Gretchen Wilson performs “’Til I Get It Right.”

The special culminates with another unexpected pairing: Heart singer Ann Wilson performing Wynette’s signature hit, “Stand by Your Man.”

Other performers include Kimberly Perry, Katie Pruitt, The War and Treaty, Carter Faith, Tami Neilson, Valerie June, Jaci Velasquez, Brittney Spencer, Jamie O’Neal, The Isaacs, Kaitlin Butts, Patty Griffin, Mandy Barnett, K.T. Tunstall and Lorrie Morgan.

Georgette Jones introduces the concert and also performs two songs honoring her mother.

Wynette died in 1998 at age 55, but the new PBS special demonstrates just how far her music continues to reach nearly three decades after her death.

And 50 years after Wynette first released the song she loved most, Boone is helping ensure that “’Til I Can Make It on My Own” gets another moment in the spotlight.
