The Chicago Bears have hired three full-time head coaches since we launced this site in 2017, so I am quite familiar with Tom Pelissero’s annual list of young coaching candidates who are worth knowing which drops this time every year.
But this is the first time that I can remember the Bears having coaching candidates other teams might be sniffing around when the new year’s hiring cycle begins in January. I suppose that is the type of thing that happens when you hire the most recent cycle’s hottest candidate. It shouldn’t surprise me that other teams might want to grab a branch off of the Ben Johnson tree. However, I wasn’t so certain it would happen this soon. Then again, I didn’t see a 9-3 start to this season coming.

The top assistant on Johnson’s staff to keep tabs on during this hiring cycle is Declan Doyle, the Bears’ offensive coordinator. This is what Pelissero had to say in his write-up about Chicago’s OC (bold emphasis mine):
One of the youngest coordinators in modern NFL history, Doyle spent three years as a student assistant at Iowa before then-Saints coach Sean Payton hired him as an offensive assistant in 2019. When Payton ended a one-year retirement to take the Broncos’ head coaching job, he hired Doyle as tight ends coach in Denver, where Doyle spent two seasons before Ben Johnson hand-picked him to serve as OC. With the Bears off to a fast start and QB Caleb Williams playing better, Doyle’s pedigree could compel some teams to at least want to pick his brain in January.
That last line (the one I bolded for emphasis) stands out to me because I do not think Declan Doyle will get a head coaching gig in this cycle. He is still young and doesn’t have regular-season play-calling experience. However, I fully expect his name to be floated as a person of interest this offseason. There is even an outside chance that he could merit consideration for a play-calling offensive coordinator gig.
If he gets interest and it leads him to leave, then I’ll be happy for him. But if he doesn’t, then I’ll welcome his return with open arms. There is value in stability and having a coach on staff who has a stmp of approval from Ben Johnson and Sean Payton. In any case, things will get interesting around Halas Hall this winter — especially if teams seeing the Bears as a blueprint for a rebuild.

The Bears’ offense ranks eighth in points and sixth in yards. On the ground, Chicago checks in with the league’s most carries and yards, while posting the sixth-highest per carry average. This group has coughed up the sixth-fewest turnovers and has the 10th-highest percentage of offensive drives that end in a score. Even with the ups-and-downs of quarterback Caleb Williams, this is the best Bears offense we’ve witnessed in sometime. So of course teams are going to want to pick the brain of this team’s top assistants.
And for what it’s worth, Declan Doyle isn’t the only Bears assistant on Pelissero’s watch list. Here are the others:

With Chicago’s football team taking the Sunday off, there is time to dive into this list. It is a doozy, as it features a handful of coaches who interviewed for the Bears gig last offseaso and some familiar names who have coached here in the past. In the end, I’m just glad to read through this list without having to obsessively look for the next leader of the Bears.
