I love what Ben Johnson had to say about Coby Bryant.
The Bears’ head coach believes his new safety is a tone-setter with “dynamic traits” that he hopes will rub off on his teammates. Getting a quality ballplayer who also seems to have leadership skills that will have his teammates follow in his footsteps is exactly what you’d draw up as a team in search of upgrading your roster on the defensive side of the ball. And while Chicago’s front office still has work to do to round out the rest of the squad, at least we have an idea of what Johnson and Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen are looking for as it goes about filling out the defense (bold emphasis mine):
“It’s something that ‘DA’ brought up as we’re going over self-scout over the last month and a half was the best defenses usually have two or three trained killers,” Johnson said, via the team’s official website. “You usually don’t have 11 of them, OK, but you’ve got two or three that are tone-setters that can really elevate the play of everyone around him. When we watched the tape, we felt like that jumped off when Coby was on the field. He’s a guy that comes out, whether he’s playing quarters, playing the post, playing down in the box, he’s coming down, and if he sees somebody, he’s looking to light them up.”
WHY COBY BRYANT WAS A PRIORITY ADDITION FOR THE BEARS’ DEFENSE
The trained killers line will certainly open some eyes. But I can’t stop re-reading the quick Coby Bryant scouting report that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson sprinkles into that quote above. It sounds like Chicago’s defense got a jack-of-all-trades type of defensive back who can line up anywhere and not give away his assignment, or what the team’s defense will do once the ball is snapped. And when your defense doesn’t have butt-kickers in the trenches, it becomes of the utmost importance to have versatile defenders who can help confuse offenses.

The powers that be at Halas Hall want the Chicago Bears to add “trained killers” to their defense. So long as these “trained killers” can tackle, excel in coverage, intercept passes, force fumbles, and create havoc on the field, then I am on board with the new additions to Chicago’s defense. At this point, you are probably wondering what a trained killer even looks like in this defense. And that would be fair. With that being said, I think we can begin with the newest starting safety, Coby Bryant.
Filling the void in the starting lineup that was left behind by the departure of Kevin Byard III was the easy part. Between free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft, there appeared to be plenty of quality safety options for the Bears to choose from. However, I was unsure how Chicago would replace Byard’s leadership role. But based on what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said about the addition of Bryant, I think the team has checked both of those boxes.
“My little exposure with him when he came in was, ‘Holy cow, this guy has got the ‘it’ factor to him,'” Johnson said via the team’s official website. “He’s got some dynamic traits in terms of his personality that I think are going to rub off on our guys—and not to mention the way he plays the game is what we want our defense to look like as well.”
Even after adding Coby Bryant, the Bears could still use another starting-caliber safety next to him after watching Jaquan Brisker leave for the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency. Chicago could use its first-round pick on Oregon’s Dillon Thieneman or Toledo’s Emmanuel McNeil-Warren to plug that hole. Or it could wait until Day 2 (or even Day 3) to unearth a worthwhile option. Perhaps free agent Donovan Wilson, entering his age-31 season, is someone who could make sense as an option. Wilson is among ESPN’s highest-ranked free agents who have yet to find a new football home to this point in the offseason.
