The Pittsburgh Steelers closed out their practice week on Friday with more questions than answers at the game’s most important position — and the Chicago Bears might catch a significant break because of it.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially questionable for Sunday’s matchup at Soldier Field, still managing a fractured bone in his left wrist suffered in last week’s win over Cincinnati. Rodgers missed Wednesday’s session entirely before returning on a limited basis Thursday and Friday. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin didn’t offer much clarity, saying only that the medical staff will determine Rodgers’ availability.
“I’m not a medical expert,” Tomlin said. “As soon as they secure it and know that he can protect himself, they’ll be comfortable.”
If Rodgers can’t go, veteran Mason Rudolph would get the call — a meaningful shift in a game where Chicago’s defense has thrived when facing backup quarterbacks. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith insisted the Steelers spent the week preparing for both outcomes, praising Rudolph for staying ready behind the scenes.

Highsmith said he “feels much better,” but the designation suggests Pittsburgh may again be without one of its key disruptors. The Bears’ offensive line — the strength of Chicago’s roster over the past month — could benefit from his absence.
In the secondary, veteran corner Darius Slay is questionable as he works his way out of concussion protocol. Tomlin confirmed that Slay would return to the starting lineup once cleared, but defensive coordinator Teryl Austin indicated that James Pierre will remain involved regardless. Pierre has played well in relief, and Pittsburgh may need both corners against a Bears passing game that continues to expand under Caleb Williams.
Pittsburgh also ruled out any late-season return for CB Cory Trice Jr., who will remain on IR after another knee setback. It’s his third straight year ending on injured reserve.
The only other notable name is DT Cameron Heyward, who received a questionable tag after managing rest and ankle issues. Heyward has traditionally played through these injury designations, but his status remains one to monitor given Chicago’s success running between the tackles and controlling games through its interior OL.
