$50M NC program will rebuild broadband infrastructure in western Helene-hit counties ...Middle East

News by : (NC news line) -

North Carolina will send grants totaling $50 million to internet service providers to rebuild broadband infrastructure in western counties hit by Hurricane Helene last year, Gov. Josh Stein said Monday.

Providers will be able to apply to the program to help fund repairs or reconstruction projects that connect residents, businesses and community institutions.

“We are working hard to rebuild western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, and that includes making sure folks have access to high-speed internet services,” Stein said in a statement. “With these investments, western North Carolinians can stay connected and more easily get back on their feet – whether seeking resources, applying for a job online, starting a business, or going to school.”

The grant program uses federal dollars sent to the state through the American Rescue Plan Act. It was formally created as part of an August spending bill.

Immediately after Helene, almost the entirety of western North Carolina was knocked offline. The largest providers struggled to get service back for weeks, and large swaths of the region (and state) remain offline or with limited connection.

Providers seeking to apply for grant funding must do so by Nov. 24.
