Michael Malone has his first major recruiting win as UNC head coach.
Demarcus Henry, a 6-foot-7 wing who 247Sports rates as a five-star prospect and a top five player in the recruiting class of 2027, announced his commitment to Malone and the Tar Heels Friday afternoon. He chose the Tar Heels over offers from several other top programs, including Louisville, Arkansas and Kentucky.
Though Henry currently plays at Compass Prep in Arizona, he is a Charlotte native. Notably, UNC was the only in-state school he visited, and his commitment Friday came less than a week after touring Chapel Hill Oct. 24. During that visit, Henry was seen at Carmichael Arena taking in a UNC volleyball match. In an interview, Henry also confirmed he received a phone call from Tar Heel legend Michael Jordan.

“He told me he knew me, so I’m geeked,” Henry said. “That’s crazy that Michael Jordan knows me. He said he’s a big fan of my game.”
Henry has more fans than just His Airness. Adam Finkelstein, director of scouting for 247Sports, wrote in July that Henry “is in the process of a major ascension.”
“He has terrific measurables,” Finkelstein said. “He’s also a smooth natural mover who covers the court effortlessly and can slide his feet. He has shown good natural touch since he was younger and clean shooting mechanics when he’s in rhythm. So, while there have been glaring two-way tools for years, Henry is now starting to put them all together and turn them into consistent production.”
Henry comes from an athletic background. His father, Chris Henry, played in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and his older brother, Chris Henry, Jr., currently plays wide receiver at Ohio State.
