Some photos are instantly iconic. The unmistakably ’90s flat-top, the oversized glasses, the grin and the blue background straight out of a Bob Ross painting: Craig Melvin’s seventh-grade photo has it all. And Lakeva K. Ferreira captured it perfectly, violin, turtleneck, and blue backdrop.
The Charlotte, North Carolina, native turned up outside the Today studios on Friday, Oct. 30, dressed as Melvin’s famous childhood portrait, a picture his co-hosts have pulled out to tease him for years. Al Roker was so thrilled when cameras spotted her on the Plaza that he practically thanked the heavens, while Melvin had just one question: “Did you pay that person?”
He didn’t need to. Producers quickly brought Ferreira into Studio 1A, where she stayed fully in character, playing her violin while the anchors tried to keep it together. “She’s not even breaking character,” Savannah Guthrie marveled.
When Melvin asked what inspired the costume, Ferreira didn’t hold back. The anchors “clown” him so much over the photo, she explained, that someone had to finally bring it to life. So she got in her car the day before, drove through the night and arrived in New York that morning.

Melvin agreed, thanking Ferreira for making the effort. She added that she had to mess with Melvin, a South Carolinian, as a fellow Carolinian from up the road.. Guthrie welcomed her into the Today show family, while Daly predicted she was about to go viral. Melvin managed to stop laughing long enough to offer a simple “Well done.”
Ferreira had clearly thought of everything, right down to the blue backdrop. “Oh, that is the best,” Guthrie said. Carson Daly made it official: “Lakeva, you win Halloween.”
