While Ange Postecoglou bemoaned his decision to swap temporary digs for something more permanent in Nottingham, Sean Dyche need not move house.
Dyche has long lived in the area, with locals often spotting him around West Bridgford, be it shopping or dining a stone’s throw from Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.
That makes location a big green check, but that alone is not the reason why Dyche is the ideal Forest appointment, as more importantly he is the firefighter the club needs at a time of disarray.
Forest find themselves in the relegation zone after eight games, with Postecoglou’s miserable 39-day reign ranking among the biggest managerial mistakes of the Premier League era.
Statistically it was the second shortest, but with Sam Allardyce’s brief 30-day Leeds United stint ending as agreed, Postecoglou goes down as the quickest sacking.

But cut beyond the ridiculous U-turn, and the rightful despair of fans lamenting the opening two months of a European season going wasted, and Dyche’s imminent arrival is – and this is a word rarely heard at the City Ground – sensible.

Dyche was a trainee at Forest during the Brian Clough era, and though he did not make a senior appearance, two of his trusty coaching staff, Ian Woan and Steve Stone, go down as club legends.
People that “get it” provide Forest with an easy and immediate lift, and undoubtedly Thursday’s atmosphere at home to Porto in the Europa League will be a vast improvement on the Postecoglou era month-and-a-bit, which ended in jeers and a swift dismissal after losing to Chelsea on Saturday.
From there, Dyche will focus on turning their league fortunes around, and tactically he is likely to revert to four at the back and once more utilise wingers – two areas Postecoglou had forsaken in recent games in a bid to salvage his job.
That will come as a boost for Callum Hudson-Odoi, who had been dropped by Postecoglou, and though they are missing the creativity of Anthony Elanga – who joined Newcastle United – Dyche’s direct, counter-attacking style could work to Dan Ndoye’s favour too.
Dyche could also give lift-off to Omari Hutchinson’s career at Forest given he is yet to start a league game since moving from Ipswich Town in the summer.
Further back, the very fact Dyche has centre-backs Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic to work with from the off puts the manager in a comfortable position.
The power couple are an early Christmas present for Dyche and will be the bedrock of this side, as they were under Nuno, while a return to 4-2-3-1 gives Morgan Gibbs-White a clearer role at No 10.
The biggest question-mark will be around Dyche’s midfield anchors. Elliot Anderson, England’s newest darling, is unlikely to lose his place, but summer arrival Douglas Luiz may have work to do with Ibrahim Sangare for competition.
The great irony is that this all applied to Nuno as well, so perhaps Dyche’s toughest task will be navigating the wishes of Marinakis and Edu – the club’s global head of football – while ensuring his own football philosophy, as attritional as it may be, is given room to breathe.
Forest’s back-up plan?
And if it all goes wrong? Well, Marinakis may not overly mind, because he could soon land on the man he has long admired. A Plan B that arguably goes down as the Greek’s Plan A.
Marco Silva worked under Marinakis at Olympiakos, and the now Fulham boss was viewed as a contender to replace Postecoglou.
However, Forest can ill-afford to pay Fulham a hefty pay package at a time when Nuno and now Postecoglou are receiving compensation as well.

Silva though is out of contract at Fulham in the summer, meaning Dyche’s tenure going south could still play into Marinakis’ hands.
And even if it works out well, Forest’s owner is not exactly one to worry about optics and would not hesitate to make changes if it means getting what he wants.
With that in mind, the fine print on Dyche’s deal will prove fascinating. It is unlikely he would commit to shorter than 18 months, but anything longer could make him another expensive dismissal later down the line.
Postecoglou’s contract, for reference, was two years. It is hard to picture Dyche getting more at one of the league’s busiest merry-go-rounds.
