Preseason Game 2, Same Starting Lineup? Fixing the Turnovers, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Tonight, the Chicago Bulls will welcome fans into the United Center for the first time this season.

Edging out the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-117 on Tuesday, Donovan Mitchell and Company now make their way East for one more preseason battle with the Bulls. While it may only be an exhibition game, it wouldn’t hurt if Billy Donovan’s squad could quickly set a tone on their home court. Let’s not forget the Bulls finished just 18-23 at the UC in 2024-25. They were the only team in the NBA last season to have a losing record in their own building and a winning record on the road.

Yikes!

The Chicago Bulls made a roster move on Wednesday afternoon. According to a new report, Kevin Knox has been added to the team’s training camp roster. The former lottery pick out of Kentucky has become an NBA journeyman. Still only 26 years old, teams have continued to give Knox a chance largely because of his NBA frame and athletic pop. Nevertheless, he has really struggled over the years to enhance his skills and score at an efficient rate. He has shot only 39.3 percent from the field over his career. The decision for Chicago continues a growing trend of taking swings at former lottery-level talent. After acquiring Josh Giddey to the mix last summer, they proceeded to add Zach Collins (No. 10, 2017 NBA Draft) and Isaac Okoro (No. 5, 2020 NBA Draft). Of course, signing Knox to a training camp deal comes with far lower risk, but it still seems to speak to this front office’s mindset. I don’t expect Knox to earn a roster spot, by the way. Chances are, he joins the Windy City Bulls and tries to play well enough to convince Arturas Karnisovas to swap out a two-way spot. FWIW: Chicago’s training camp roster is now at 20 players (15 guaranteed deals + three two-way contracts + two invites). Knox joins Mouhamadou Gueye as the second invite. The Chicago Bulls have one more open spot before meeting the league limit. Chicago Bulls Reportedly Sign Kevin Knox as Training Camp Continues Will Billy Donovan go with the same starting lineup tonight? The starting small forward battle feels as though it will come down to Kevin Huerter and Isaac Okoro. With that in mind, even if Coby White remains stuck in street clothes, it may be best to evaluate the two individually in the starting five moving forward. Donovan opted to start both for Game 1. To be sure, playing Huerter in White’s open spot does make sense. Having the floor spacing and off-ball shooting skills next to Giddey is important. Still, if there is only one true opening in the starting five come Oct. 21, I’d rather Donovan put Tre Jones or Ayo Dosunmu at the two for now. I also can’t help but wonder if we’ll see the rotation change somewhat drastically. Donovan went with Tre Jones, Ayo Dosunmu, Julian Phillips, Dalen Terry, and Zach Collins off the bench in that order. In other words, $90 million man Patrick Williams was the 11th man! I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised to see Donovan give him a little more run with the regulars this evening. Might he serve as Buzelis’ primary backup this time around and move ahead of Phillips? If one thing is for sure, Terry’s strong defensive stand at the end of Tuesday’s game will likely keep him near the top of the line for now. Dalen Terry of the Chicago Bulls – © Erik Williams-Imagn Images To the Chicago Bulls’ credit, they settled into their first preseason game pretty well. The offense really started to click in the second quarter, and it was easy to see how their combination of speed and length could create problems for defenses moving forward. With that said, turnovers remain a brutal problem. It’s honestly a miracle they even pulled off the win with 26 mistakes, which the Cavs turned into 36 points! If there is ONE thing I’ll be on the lookout for tonight, it’s ball control. And it sounds like I’m not alone. Billy Donovan sounded incredibly disappointed by the turnover margin this week. The Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley has more on all of that, and I encourage you to give that a read. I’m very eager to see if Noa Essengue can build on what we saw in the last game. I’d also love it if he came in a little earlier in the night to deal with the size of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. We’ll see.
