Less than a week ago, news broke that Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee was on the Mets’ list of interviewees for their coaching staff vacancy. And while one coach — an assistant hitting coach, no less — can only be credited (or on the hook) for so much success/failure, losing Mallee was not something we wanted. Recall the story of how much of an impact he’s had on Pete Crow-Armstrong, and the credit PCA gave to Mallee as part of his big breakout this year. Well, good news, my friends: He’s staying put.
Here’s the news, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN: “Coaching news: Cubs hitting coach John Mallee has withdrawn from consideration for a job with the Mets, per a source. He’s staying in Chicago.”
Love to see it.
John Mallee’s time with the Cubs started back in 2014 as the big league team’s hitting coach. After a few years, he was let go, and spent time as a hitting coach with the Phillies and Angels. He then returned to the Cubs organization in 2023 as the Iowa Cubs hitting coach, before getting the bump back up to the big league team as the assistant hitting coach for the last few seasons.
This year, he helped to oversee a pretty fantastic offensive group (… one or two stretches notwithstanding) who finished the season leading the league with a 114 wRC+ and leading the NL with 220 home runs (3rd best in MLB).
Also, while I couldn’t say for sure if this has anything to do with it, as coaches (and players) turn down job interviews/offers all the time for unrelated reasons … I do wonder if the Mets have a little bit of stink on them right now. I’m not just making that up, either. It’s an actual narrative coming out of New York at the moment.
Here’s the latest on that from Pat Ragazzo:
While the Mets have been interviewing candidates for a hitting coach position, they could have trouble hiring the individual they desire. This isn’t surprising given the disastrous year the Mets just endured in 2026, where they failed to meet lofty expectations.“The problem the Mets face is that candidates are more interviewing them than the other way around,” the same league source said. “The industry feels like going to the Mets can set your career back.”
You have to wonder if that’ll extend to players, and if the almost IMMEDIATE success of David Peterson (with the Cubs) and Freddy Peralta (with the Rays) fueled that fire. But maybe I’m just wishcasting ahead of a postseason in which I hope the Cubs are battling against the Mets for the best free agents.

Just as possible Mallee did not want to move or was worried about job security in New York. Who knows. In any case, for now, the news is clear and good: John Mallee is staying put in Chicago.
