On Monday afternoon, NHL Central Scouting released their preliminary rankings for the 2027 NHL Draft. The headline top prospect in the 2027 NHL Draft class is University of Michigan defenseman Landon DuPont.
In these rankings, players receive a grade that projects their draft stock at this point in their pre-draft season.
A Grade=1st round prospect B Grade=2nd/3rd round prospect C Grade=4th/5th round prospect W Grade=6th/7th round prospect LV (limited viewing)=prospect needs to be seen moreHere’s how the 2027 preliminary rankings compare to the 2026 NHL Draft preliminary rankings.
Grade Position 2026 Draft 2027 Draft A Forwards 17 22 A Defensemen 10 5 A Goaltenders 0 1 A Total All Positions 27 28For the sake of comparison, 28 players received an A grade for the 2023 and 2024 NHL Drafts and only 25 players received an A grade for the 2025 NHL Draft. This year’s group has one more than last year’s preliminary list.
It’s also worth noting that there were twice as many defensemen considered first-round prospects at this point in the process one year ago. The 2027 NHL Draft figures to be very forward — especially center — heavy at the top. Last year’s draft class was incredibly blue line heavy after the top 2-3 forward prospects.
