Thirty years ago, if you mentioned “The Streak” to anyone with even a passing interest in or knowledge of baseball, they’d know exactly what you were talking about.
Cal Ripken Jr. just about never missed a game in his playing career, amassing a consecutive games played streak of 2,632 games that I can say with confidence will never, ever again be approached (unless, of course, the sport is so fundamentally transformed in its day-to-day operations to make it conceivable again). Famously, Ripken passed Lou Gehrig with game 2,131 on September 6, 1995, and honestly, everyone I knew in my 13-year-old orbit watched it live:
It is not an exaggeration to say that Cal Ripken Jr.’s streak was national news for days. The moment was the culmination of a quest that began May 30, 1982, and just kept on going. It brought a lot of us together, especially a year after the 1994 strike wiped out the postseason.
To put 2,632 games played consecutively into context, the current longest streak in MLB is Braves first baseman Matt Olson at 948. Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso is second at 577. Miguel Tejada came the closest of anyone after Ripken’s streak ended … and he was short by, ohhhhh, almost 10 seasons worth of games.
The record streak is one of the most impressive accomplishments in any sport, and I’m hard pressed to come up quickly with other feats that fit in the same kind of category.
Turns out, though, you could make an argument for a feat in the collectibles world, at least if Orioles fan Rick Taylor is able to pull it off. You see, he’s trying to match Ripken’s streak by collecting a ticket from EVERY SINGLE GAME IN THE STREAK:

— | kevin (@kevinkauffman) October 24, 2026Taylor has been collecting the tickets for decades, almost accidentally falling into the quest after first just trying to get every ticket from Ripken’s home run games. Like Ripken, Taylor just kept going and going, and then suddenly it’s this thing that consumes you and you have to complete. I totally get it, and I really hope he’s able to find those last eight tickets.
Frankly, the fact that he’s even gotten this close is unbelievable when you consider how many completely meaningless games – hundreds of them! – would’ve taken place on the road during the streak. Finding someone who saved some random Twins-Orioles ticket from April 1988 or whatever … can you imagine?
Read the full story at the AP for how Taylor has pulled it off. What comes next for him if he does complete The Chase of The Streak? Hard to say. Could be a gift. Could be an auction. Could just be the start of another chase:
“He and his wife don’t have any children, and he said their nieces and nephews aren’t especially interested in it. One possibility he’d welcome is for the collection to end up with Ripken himself.
It could also fetch a substantial sum at auction. Provenzale estimated that Taylor’s collection, if completed, could command in the “high five figures,” and potentially more than $100,000, especially because of the “story” it tells.
“If somebody got a ticket to every game Ken Griffey Jr. played, that would be impressive, too, but the Ripken collection has something a little bit extra because of that consecutive games record,” Provenzale said. “It adds a purpose to the collection.”
But even if Taylor finds the last eight tickets, the hunt wouldn’t necessarily be over. In the collecting world, there’s a hierarchy: Full tickets are more desirable than ticket stubs. Ones issued by the box office are better than ones from Ticketmaster. And none are more valuable than the oversized, elaborately designed tickets issued to season ticket holders. In other words, there are always ways to improve the collection.
“It’s never-ending,” Taylor said with a laugh.”
