Cubs manager Craig Counsell said rookie pitcher Cade Horton would not be a factor at all in the NLDS as he recovers from a rib injury. Horton is currently on the IL and his status for later in the playoffs (if Cubs advance, of course) is also in question right now.

He was last weekend able to throw a bit, but Jed Hoyer said it was clear that Horton would not be able to do so without altering his mechanics. And you just can’t have that. Too much risk of further injury and of poor performance.
It’s just such a huge bummer, both for Horton and for the Cubs. He had become a critical part of the rotation in the second half, and however the rest of this postseason shakes out, we might be left to wonder how different it could’ve looked with Horton making starts.
Here’s hoping that either that doesn’t matter because the Cubs keep on winning, or he makes a miraculous return in the NLCS.
