I’m still pretty bummed about Cole Kmet’s season-ending injury. Kmet appeared to have found his role in this Bears offense as a do-it-all second tight end. The Notre Dame product proved he can be someone deployed in-line, in the slot, or in the backfield. He can block, run routes, and catch. Plus, his leadership skills and work ethic are the types of things that can rub off on younger teammates. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson was right to say that it stinks that Kmet will be out for the year. This is a huge loss.
That said, the Bears’ head coach was also right to point out that the show goes on and that this team will move on without him. We know they’ll play for their fallen teammate. But who will step up and fill the void Kmet left behind? Let’s discuss.
Chicago Bears Tight End Options to Watch After Cole Kmet’s Season-Ending Injury
A quick look at the Bears’ tight end options behind Colston Loveland on the depth chart:
Sam Roush — As colleague Patrick Flowers pointed out in Friday’s Bears Bits, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson believes this rookie tight end is trending in the right direction. “We’ve been very pleased with the improvements he’s made over the first few weeks,” Johnson said on Friday. “He has some rookie hiccups, like everybody does, but he doesn’t make the same mistake twice.” Roush’s Soldier Field debut was awful. And it’s not as if he has been great in the games since. Still, it feels like there is nowhere to go but up for the Stanford product. This is a major opportunity for him. I hope he takes advantage of it. Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Stephen Carlson — The 29-year-old tight end has been a fixture on Chicago’s practice squad since 2023, but has played in just three regular-season games during that time. Most of Carlson’s NFL experience came with the Cleveland Browns, where he played 25 games (7 starts!) in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. I don’t have great expectations for the Princeton product, but having someone with professional experience is nice. Qadir Ismail — Ismail is the other Bears tight end on the practice squad. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 232 pounds, the Samford product was originally a quarterback at Villanova before converting to wide receiver and eventually moving into a tight end role. Ismail is the son of former NFL wideout Qadry Ismail, who played 137 games during his 10-year NFL career with the Vikings, Saints, Ravens, and Colts. Hayden Large — You could tell how much the Bears’ head coach loved Large coming out of Iowa. That Chicago was able to scoop him up as an undrafted free agent could ultimately prove to be a quality move by this front office. Unfortunately, Large is on injured reserve (the Trib’s Brad Biggs believes it’s a core injury) and isn’t an option at the moment. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw him later this year once healthy. But I just don’t know when that will be.Bears TE Hayden Large on an island with the Bengals’ DE. t.co/UzQMa4DjHB
— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) August 24, 2026Given the names listed above, I can understand if you’re reading and your mind immediately goes to a place where you wonder if trading for a tight end makes sense for the Bears. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a big market to choose from. However, one name stands out as a possible fit.
If the Philadelphia Eagles continue their sell-off, Daniel Popper (The Athletic) lists Dallas Goedert as the only tight end on his top-50 NFL Trade Deadline 2026 big board. The Vikings and Seahawks are listed as fits here. But I’ll point out that his posted before Kmet went down with his injury. Even if Popper revised his list of team fits, I’m not sure the Bears would swing a trade for a tight end. At least, not one more known primarily for their prowess as a pass-catcher. Then again, I know better than to rule anything out just because it doesn’t make sense at first glance.
