What Was the Deal With Ben Johnson’s Halftime Interview? ...Middle East

Ben Johnson’s halftime interview with NFL on CBS sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala was an eye-opener.

In case you missed it because you were coming back from a halftime bathroom break or snack grab, here ya go:

“Do you need to change what you’re doing?”

“I don’t know, you think so?“

“We’re going to be just fine.”

Was Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson a little snippy in that halftime snippet? Sure. Was it out of line? Hardly. Given the brief nature of halftime and the fact that the Bears were trailing at halftime after 30 minutes of awful football, that whole exchange was understandable. It isn’t the first time we have seen or heard Johnson be short with a reporter. Do you remember his short fuse getting lit earlier in September? Frankly, I doubt it will be the last time we see an exchange like the one above.

This is what the Bears’ head coach had to say about the interview (via Peggy Kusinski on Twitter/X) when asked about it on Monday:

In the moment I didn’t think too much of it, I’m in game mode. But then when I look back at it, I am a little disappointed with what that looks like. I didn’t hear very well and that’s not an excuse, but when I thought I heard I needed to make some changes and not a question I didn’t take that so well.

Not only did Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson give a reflective answer, Kusinski notes that he said he will be better. Johnson asks for his players to be “good, better, best” on game day, so it is only right for him to expect the same for himself. Moving forward, he needs to act on it. I’ve been writing in this spot for so long that I have lost count of the many players and coaches who have blamed others for unsavory interactions with the media. So to see Johnson fess up, own it, and declare will be better was refreshing.

In the end, my biggest takeaway from the Ben Johnson interview with CBS Sports sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala had little to do with their personal interaction and everything to do with what the coach said. Johnson came out strong, discussing the team’s need to establish its identity in the second half, then dropped a “we’re going to be just fine” to close it out. I didn’t feel good about the odds of the Bears finding their identity on the road while trailing. And I certainly didn’t think things were going to be fine in that second half. But the Bears seemed to take on the temperament and personality of their head coach.

Whatever happened at halftime ultimately sparked an in-game turnaround that led to a Bears come-from-behind victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. Chicago’s football team is on the bye this week and will not be back in action again until Week 6, when it travels to Washington to face the Commanders on Monday Night Football. This team has a lot to work on when it gets back to work. The offensive line, running game, and defensive line are three points of emphasis that should be addressed in the 14 days between games.

And as it turns out, Ben Johnson has something to work on, too — by his own admission.
