The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is considering selling a stake in the commercial rights to Team USA to outside investors.
As first reported by Sky News, the USOPC has begun talks with potential investors about a deal that would open up private investment options for funding ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
Unlike many Olympic Committees around the world, the USOPC is not government funded. The committee has hired the Raine Group to explore potential financing options.
Sources told Sky News that the USOPC’s commercial rights could be valued at “several billion dollars,” though cautioned that no deal has been finalized and a potential agreement could take different forms, including a debt raise rather than the sale of a stake.
According to USOPC Board of Directors meeting minutes, the organization has been exploring the creation of a commercial entity called United States Olympic and Paralympic Ventures (USOPV), with discussions dating back to 2024.
“Sports entities are all focused on building their direct-to-consumer value proposition,” USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland told Sportico. “How do we build our fan base, know who our fans are and customize offerings for those fans? How do we drive content and engagement both within our competition environment but also outside and beyond our competition environment?”
The United States last hosted the Olympics in 2002, but is now preparing to host two Games within a six-year span, with the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles followed by the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah.
Sources told Sky News that the USOPC’s objective is to “put the Olympic movement in the U.S. on a sustainable long-term footing ahead of the summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028 and the Winter Olympics in Utah six years later.”
The USOPC has an existing commercial partnership with the LA28 organizing committee, known as United States Olympic and Paralympic Properties, which will end following the 2028 Games. The organization has not yet established a similar arrangement with the organizers of the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah.
Meanwhile, the USOPC will enter the renewal period for its commercial rights in January 2027, with new agreements taking effect in 2029.
Hirshland told Sportico that U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Ventures will include both domestic and global sponsorship and licensing deals, content distribution and direct-to-consumer sales, outside of the Utah 2034 ticketing and hospitality, which will remain with the organizing committee.
USOPC Vice President of strategic communications Jon Mason told Forbes the committee “is evaluating a range of commercial models to generate greater resources in support of its mission.”
According to Sportico, tax filings showed that Team USA generated $264 million in revenue in 2025, an Olympic off-year, compared to $496 million in 2024, when the United States won 40 gold and 126 total medals at the Paris Olympics.
“The next decade represents an unprecedented opportunity for Team USA and the US Olympic and Paralympic Movement,” a USOPC spokesperson said in a statement sent to Sky News. “As part of our responsibility to maximize that opportunity for the athletes and NGBs [national governing bodies] we serve, the USOPC is evaluating a range of commercial models to generate greater resources in support of its mission.
“We’ve been in ongoing conversation with athlete and NGB leaders during this process, and that will continue. Any path forward will preserve the USOPC’s mission, governance, leadership and commitment to Team USA athletes.
“This is a moment of real momentum for Team USA. With LA28 and Utah-2034 on home soil, and Team USA’s commercial rights returning to the USOPC after the LA28 Games, we’re building the capabilities to better grow and support the Movement for generations ahead.”
This past summer, FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced significant backlash after proposing the sale of a minority stake in a new commercial entity overseeing the World Cup and other FIFA events. The proposal was ultimately abandoned following opposition from UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation.
The USOPC’s approach has differed from FIFA, having consulted several NGBs and athletes throughout the process. FIFA, on the other hand, was heavily criticized for developing its plan without adequate consultation with its members.
