Oof: Coby White Coming Into Training Camp With an Injury ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls’ leading scorer will come into training camp banged up.

During Monday afternoon’s Media Day, Arturas Karnisovas was the first to reveal that Coby White suffered a calf injury in August. While he confirmed that everyone else on the roster has arrived in Chicago and is good to go for Day 1, White will have to wait before he can join the team in full.

“They’re all here,” Karnisovas said about the training camp roster. “Coby is going to be limited. He had a calf strain in August, but we’re working him back slowly. He’s going to be limited in training camp and preseason. Hopefully, we can see him at the end of preseason. But our focus is on him being ready for the regular season.”

White went on to promptly confirm the news when addressing the media, sharing that the training staff has been handling the rehab process gradually:

“I strained my calf like a month ago. I’ve been dealing with that, so I’ll be pretty limited this first week in training camp and then see how it goes,” White said. “I’m still ramping up. It’s nothing major. Mild strain. It’s continuing to get better. Obviously, the calf is nothing to play with, so we’re trying to take it slow.”

Coby White Starts Training Camp on Injury Report

On the one hand, it sounds as though Arturas Karnisovas or Coby White is particularly concerned about the severity of the injury. They were both speaking as if the plan is still to have White on the floor for the team’s opening night matchup against the Detroit Pistons on Oct. 22. That’s good news.

On the other hand, it always stings when a player has to begin training camp on the sideline, particularly a player as meaningful to the team as White. The Bulls have an extremely young group that is trying to build on the progress they showed in the second half of last season. White was an essential part of that progress, emerging as a true go-to threat on the offensive end. He averaged 24.5 points on 49.4 percent shooting from the field over the team’s last 26 games, going a surprising 17-9 in those games.

The truth of the matter is that preparing for the regular season without your offensive engine can certainly lead to some early-season growing pains. And that’s why it will be crucial to watch just how long it takes for White to return to full strength.

Speaking of which, as White noted, calf strains are no joke. We have seen this injury become a troublesome problem in today’s NBA. So while the hope clearly is that White steps on the preseason court over the next couple of weeks, it’s probably not wise to declare his opening night availability a given right now. The team will certainly have its fingers crossed, but they will want to be extra careful with White’s ramp-up in the coming days.
