ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The 2025 Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic returned to Rochester for its second year, showcasing more than just football. News10NBC’s Ian Mills was at the event all day, capturing the culture and community spirit.
“It’s been amazing. I mean, look at the band. Look at the energy, the people. It’s been a crazy day,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans.
The excitement began before the game with a lively tailgate featuring food, drinks, and music. A fan expressed their enthusiasm for the bands, saying, “I don’t watch football. I want to see the bands.”
The event highlighted HBCU culture in an area without historical black colleges or universities. “So this is a new experience for me. And I am excited to see our culture being brought so far up north because most of our kids here don’t get to see this here,” said Toi Walker-Smith.
In conjunction with the game, the city held a college fair on Thursday, attended by more than 1,600 students.
The Frederick Douglass HBCU Classic is about more than just football. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without attending an HBCU, and I would definitely say that bringing the culture back to a predominantly black city that doesn’t have any schools like this around, mean, everything that I learned at an HBCU involves black history, and I really enjoyed it,” said another attendee.
The event celebrated the rich culture and history of HBCUs, providing a unique experience for the Rochester community.
