THE POSITION
The Colorado Sun is seeking a Director of Audience to lead our strategy for reaching new readers, engaging communities and preparing for the future of news discovery. This role will guide how Coloradans find, experience and connect with our journalism — from search and social to newsletters, AI-driven platforms and beyond.
This is both a visionary and hands-on role: you’ll set strategy, lead experiments, manage a small team and collaborate across editorial, product and revenue to ensure The Sun is growing sustainably. You’ll play a pivotal role in our ambitious statewide expansion and help design how millions of Coloradans discover and engage with our work.
The Director of Audience will lead community listening and The Sun’s strategic events strategy. They will work closely with the Product Lead (who leads our digital strategy to enhance reader engagement), the Director of Development (who leads our fundraising and membership growth), and the Director of Sales (who leads revenue generation strategy). Together, these roles will collaborate on cross-departmental projects to ensure that The Sun’s journalism serves community information needs; reaches wider, more diverse audiences; and secures the financial support necessary to grow sustainably.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Audience Growth & Discovery
SEO: Lead SEO strategy that implements the latest best practices, train reporters on what’s best, pitch stories that could be search plays. Social: Lead social strategy that focuses on new audience discovery and building community. Develop a video content strategy in collaboration with the Product Team to reach younger audiences. Newsletter: Lead newsletter strategy by monitoring performance, working with reporters to increase engagement and developing a growth plan. New Channel Discovery: Evaluate new channels for reaching audiences, such as TikTok, SMS messaging and WhatsApp. Manage network partners, such as Apple News, Nextdoor, SmartNews, etc. User experience: Monitor and track KPIs and goals for ideal user behavior, ie. views per session, time on story, etc, and work with the product team to implement.Data, Engagement & Team Leadership
Analyze data: Analyze data for real-time changes to articles and distribution strategies. Find trends on topics, editorial approaches, headlines, etc., to inform our editorial strategy and distribution approaches. Analyze demographics so we can better understand who we are serving and who we want to be serving. Engagement: Work with reporters to connect with readers and bring them into the reporting process. Pitch: Help shape long-term newsroom content strategy. Must be comfortable shaping approaches or pitching stories to help reach target audiences and to hit monthly goals. Incorporate reader feedback when possible.Strategic Events Strategy
Events: Develop and execute an events strategy to grow and engage our audience and continue establishing The Sun as an important convener of important community conversations with newsmakers, our audience and our journalists. Events planning will require deep collaboration with partners in the editorial, development and sales departments. Sun events include in-person and virtual productions, reflecting our need to serve the entire state. This position will supervise an events coordinator. Community Listening: Develop and deploy community listening as strategic infrastructure for journalism, audience trust and sustainable revenue. This will involve developing partnerships with libraries, nonprofits, civic groups, faith organizations and other established organizations. Community listening will combine in-person events, surveys, online forums and social media drop-in groups.Team and Organizational Leadership
Collaborative innovation: Works in partnership with the Product lead to enhance the user experience, shape The Sun’s digital product roadmap and lead from audience and product experiments. Team management: Lead and mentor a small team focused on audience engagement, fostering a culture of creativity, professional growth, accountability and experimentation. Serve on the leadership team, collaborating with peers in the design and implementation of strategies that strengthen the organization, expand our footprint and enhance our impact while modeling excellence in professionalism, teamwork and performance.QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years of experience in audience, SEO, social media, newsletters or digital production, including 1-2 years of newsroom experience or a degree in journalism Strong news judgment and communication skills Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to juggle multiple short and long-term priorities and work across multiple departments Strong and nuanced understanding of best practices for SEO, social media, newsletters and headline writing. A track record of growing audience and community engagement in one or all of these areas. Experience with in-person engagement is a plus Strong drive for innovation and experimentation, comfortable creating an idea, executing it and analyzing how it went Comfortable using data for real-time changes and long-term strategy Creative teammate who thrives in small, mission-driven environments. Comfortable proactively working with newsroom leaders to help guide our journalism to better reach the right audiences Experience with Google Analytics, Parse.ly, Google Search Console, Wordpress and Active Campaign is a plusWHY JOIN US
