Days before he opened as Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate in London’s West End, Matthew Rhys knew whose shadow he was standing in.
“The film is almost an institution in itself,” the 25-year-old told said in March 2000. “Everyone has either seen it or heard of it or heard that Dustin Hoffman played the role.”
Hoffman came to a performance. He never stopped backstage afterward, Rhys told the Why Are You More Successful Than Me? podcast in an episode released Wednesday.

Rhys allowed that Hoffman may simply have had dinner plans, then landed on the darker read anyway: “There’s something about my performance he does not like.”
