NBC is giving a big push to its contemporary update of the ‘70s hit series The Rockford File, by premiering it on Saturday, Jan. 2,2027 immediately following the NFL telecast before moving it into its regular timeslot on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The feature, giving fans a direct touchpoint with Jim Rockford, was inspired by the iconic voicemail from the original series, which starred James Garner as Rockford. The Rockford Files 2027 is a contemporary update on the classic series. Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles. It doesn’t take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime.
In an earlier interview, Boreanaz, who got permission from Garner’s daughter Gigi before taking the role, described his version of the character: “For me, it’s really tapping into the vulnerability of this character. That’s a big goal of mine for me for him, is to wear that mask of vulnerability.”
As for Rockford’s other qualities, Boreanaz said, “He’s confident. He’s savvy. He’s fun to watch. He’s interesting. Sure, he can be a little curmudgeon at times, but he gets the job done — not necessarily with his fists, but he walks with his fists in mind. So, there’s a lot of ways that he can get information and get things done using his fists some other way, with his mind or whatnot.”
In addition to Boreanaz, the series stars Michaela McManus, Ilfenesh Hadera and Jacki Weaver.
The Rockford Files will air on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Stream next day on Peacock.
